Background:
Washington State Artist Geoffrey Wilson has worked extensively as a session musician, musical director, composer and producer. With an impressive list of clients including FCB Worldwide, Van Nuys Airport, Xirlink, Contempo Design, Signature Music Europe, Conservation International, and many others, Geoffrey has vast experience writing for ads, corporate, and industrial projects, as well as feature films and documentaries.

 Some Questions We Asked Geoffrey:

–High profile projects or clients you have worked for?

Signature Music Europe, which led to radio and television placements acrossEurope.

–Primary instrument? –Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?

Guitar is my primary instrument. Piano and keyboards are my second. I love my Mac Pro Quad and Nuendo software in sync with my Yamaha O1V96 mixer.

–Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?

Custom made Thompson Guitar fromCanada. It’s the most amazing steel string acoustic guitar I’ve ever played for fingerstyle.

–Film score or song you admire? Why?

Prokofiev’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.1. Besides being one of the most intensely dramatic and emotional pieces I’ve ever heard the changes and use of polytonality and rhythm are brilliant. Also, the piano technique is just insane.

–Music education background?

I have a Bachelor of Music in Composition from CSUN with classical guitar as my main instrument and piano as my second. I also spent time studying classical guitar at California Institute of the Arts, Composition at UCSB and Balinese and Javanese Gamelan atCalArts and UCLA.

–Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?

Let the music write itself.

–Most embarrassing music-related moment?

I was doing a big show inSeattlewith a singer named Marcella Havel. I was on acoustic guitar  playing some difficult swing changes and somehow, someway I hit a really bad clunker. I put a big smile on my face and purposely did it again. The audience got the joke and started laughing.

–If you had a time machine and could record or perform once with any artist, who would it be?

Miles Davis.

–Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

Hearing the guitar solo in Jane by the Jefferson Starship when I was eleven.

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

Always study technology as well as music.

–Five songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

Yes – Relayer

CrosbyStills Nash and Young – So Far

Buddhadev Das Gupta – Raga Jaijaivanti

J.S. Bach – Goldberg Variations

Joe Pass/Joe Pisano Duets.

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

I’d like to spend more time working on piano music.

–Favorite time of day to work in your studio?

Morning.

–Any studio collaboration you experienced that stands out in your mind?  Why?

Yeah. My good friend Jake Feldman (son of the late Victor Feldman  of Steely Dan) and I had a crazy, unadulterated, Zappa-esk project that was the funniest thing I’ve ever played in. If I still lived inL.A.I would still be involved with the project just because of the nirvana of it all.
