Francois Girad, director of The Red Violin (1998) starring Samuel L Jackson, originally wanted to use period music from each of the five historical periods through which the story subject travels. Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Corigliano disagreed and instead pushed for this single, compelling theme to follow the instrument through the story:
I once watched Corigliano confess to a group of college students that he was deathly afraid of actually performing music, especially after growing up backstage with his father, a concertmaster for the New York Philharmonic who regularly performed major works written for the violin.
How satisfying it must have been then for Corigliano to receive an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the soundtrack and later receive commissions to flesh out the main theme into a full length violin concerto performed by the likes of Philharmonia Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
