A person’s politics – much like the person they marry or their religion – is largely an emotional decision. Therefore a political candidate who tries to solicit votes must know they’re diving into an ocean of mass psychosis most of us couldn’t comprehend.

That’s probably why former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, who worked for five Presidents, recommended that anyone who actually wants to be president should automatically be disqualified from being president. “Gerald Ford was as close to normal as you get,” he said “….and he was never elected.”

Regardless of which side of the aisle you emotionally fall, you probably want a president who gets things done. After watching Donald Trump’s team do everything they believed necessary to secure the rights to Aerosmith’s “Dream On” and still get blocked from using the song, I would say any candidate who can successfully navigate the world of music licensing deserves to be president.

The litany of gotchas a candidate would face when trying to use, for example, Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” would go something like this:

  • If the candidate uses the original recording of “I Will Survive” at a rally in an Iowa cornfield, Universal Music Group could sue for unauthorized use of the sound recording. Even though the label didn’t originally write or publish the song, they own the sounds that were actually recorded by the musicians. Stay with me here.
  • If, to get around this, the candidate then hires a local church choir to perform the song(!), ASCAP can sue for an authorized public performance of a song written by their long-time member Freddie Perren.
  • If the candidate then moves the rally into a local auditorium that has an ASCAP license, ASCAP can sue the candidate the moment the video gets posted on the candidate’s website…internet is considered a public performance.
  • If the candidate bones up the ASCAP fee and begins using the song in their campaign videos, Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Group can then sue because a synchronization license was not obtained to allow use of the song as part of a video.
  • And finally, if Gloria Gaynor herself becomes infuriated by the candidate’s careless remarks about hair extensions, as the artist she can sue for “false endorsement”. I’m not making this up.

Therefore, dear political candidate, let us make your life easier and humbly offer you royalty-free music for under $100 hand-picked from our catalog of over 40,000 tracks. This music is perfect for that short, but critical period of time between the end of your speech and the baby-kissing. Good luck.
“All Across America” by Steve Steckler

“Corporate Drive” by Stern Muzik

“Victorious” by Shockwave-Sound

“Upwardly Focused” by T. Brown

“Champions” by Fatto Music

“You’ll remember it now….because you’ve got pain around it.”

A website programmer said that to me once after bailing me out of a 3-hour technical struggle. That must be why I remember NOTHING about the creation of this jingle I wrote for the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce in the 90’s. Producer Craig Miller was so easy to work with, there wasn’t any pain around it:

“We Make Stuff” by Mike Bielenberg

Seriously, I do remember a few things. The guitarist was Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow, Don Henley). It was recorded on ADATS – hugely popular machines now seen as the bridge between 2-inch tape and Pro Tools. And because the track needed punk-rock male vocals, I got to do all the singing…ok..shouting. I was born with the brain of a romantic comedy film composer…and the voice of a Marine drill sergeant. Go figure.

But by far, the most notable part of this project was my client…Atlanta film producer Craig Miller.

Two months ago Craig was appointed by the governor of Georgia as chair of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Advisory Commission. I’m not exactly sure what a “chair” does, but I hope for Craig’s sake it involves great food. I also hope Craig will be cool with me excessively dropping his name at industry parties.

When Craig and I worked together I witnessed the Zen-like quality that pulled him through thousands of video productions for the likes of Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines & IBM. Craig has personality too. A southern gentleman to his core, it always seemed like Craig had Mark Twain in his ear – telling him the wise thing to say at all times.

That’s why Craig chooses to do so many projects for non-profit and civil organizations. One recent project was a video campaign for Georgia Tourism called “We Love This State”.

Back in the day, while I was busy fussing with cranky session musicians and music software glitches (there’s pain around THAT), Craig was busy planting seeds in this great city of Atlanta with the future in mind.  Craig always prioritized the greater good…not just in his rhetoric, but in his actions and the way he did business.  It only took a few projects with Craig’s peers/competitors to realize how rarely video producers let their composers take creative risks…or value their time.

Congratulations on your appointment, Craig. I’m proud to call you a friend….and proud of the incredible work we’ve done together.

“Let us endeavor so to live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.”

-Mark Twain

I recently did some marketing consulting for a friend to promote his upcoming album release. I advertised his documentary-style video on Google Adwords as a “TrueView In-Stream” ad; which is Google-speak for those pre-roll videos we all have to sit through for five seconds before we’re allowed to click out.

Despite how much ad agencies have adopted their creative to this new medium, let’s be honest; we all still scoff at pre-roll ads. But here’s the thing: From the perspective of a small business owner, pre-roll ads on YouTube are hands-down the best value in advertising right now.

Check out this analytics report from my friend’s campaign:

Google’s payment model is crazy. Because they only charge advertisers when the viewer continues watching past the mandatory five-seconds and keeps watching for at least 30 seconds (see “Views” in chart). That’s like…never. The real value is the number of people who are held captive to your video for five seconds. But Google doesn’t charge for that part. That’s how my friend paid only $300.00 to put his get his video in front of 31,873 sets of eyeballs (see “Impressions” in chart).

If you’re producing videos for clients, be sure to tell them about this incredible value. And be sure to build your script around communicating your core message in under five seconds. With over 6 billions hours of video being viewed each month on YouTube, I believe TrueView In-Stream ads are the best thing happening in advertising.

In my next installment of this blog series, I’ll outline the targeting features in Google that allowed my friend to show his video to exactly the type of people who would buy his album. The “view-through-rate” (see above chart) on this campaign was the kind of number marketers brag about at cocktail parties.
Stay tuned.
