In memory of B.B. King, we asked one of our newest musicians for parting thoughts on the reigning King of Blues. This particular musician, Robert Heft, was the right guy to ask because tracks he uploaded such as Bottom of the Blues and Hey Baby exhibit a depth and authenticity that goes way beyond the mechanics of pentatonic scales and cigarettes. This guy’s lived through some serious stuff and it oozes through his music:

“B.B. King was the first guitarist I can remember seeing on television,” Heft explains. “I was about 12 years old and already learning to play. He had this amazing vibrato, I’d never seen or heard anything like it. It changed the way I looked at and listened to not only guitarists but all string players, horn players, vocalists, etc. This was a guitarist’s signature, their stamp, their individuality, their tone. Hearing B.B. King play MEANT something, made me FEEL something. Every electric guitarist on the planet is influenced by him and owes him a debt of gratitude and respect. B.B. King may be gone, but the THRILL will never be and his music will live on forever.

The other aspect of the band that looks far different to me – after years of troubleshooting technical stuff on the internet – is Eddie Van Halen’s legendary “brown sound.” No matter how loud he turned up his amp or how distorted he played a power chord, there was never any harshness to his sound. There was a certain softness to his tone even as the decibal levels were loud enough to break glass. It was a massive part of Edward’s mystique. 

As it turns out, this all happened by accident….and by necessity. Eddie’s first amplifier was ordered from an overseas catalog and therefore didn’t use standard US voltage levels. As a workaround, Van Halen employed the use of a variable transformer that could lower or raise the voltage going into his amplifier. The current level that sounded most pleasing to his ear was approximately 90 volts, lower than the usual 110 volts routed to Marshall stacks. Eddie Van Halen essentially created a “brownout” – the kind you hear about in big cities – within his guitar rig. His power chords wet still powerful; just more..well…brown.

So just like me, stadium PA systems across the US took a small amount of energy current from Edward Van Halen and amplified it into something bigger. Something that served us. Something that met a need at that time.

When I first held my father’s guitar–  Love at first note.

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

Practice, practice, practice.  Also, more practice.  It’s not an easy business to get into, so maybe also have a solid day job?

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

Recently I started learning the ukulele.  I’m already in love and want to master it!

When I first heard the phrase “creative class” I instantly got excited. Much like the phrase “group think” or “food coma”, a name had finally been created for something that’s been around for hundreds of years without a proper label.

I thought, finally there’s some acknowledgement of people from whom original thought constantly emanates, an umbrella for people with whom music/film/books resonate so deeply they miss meals and show up late for everything.

In this blog series we’ll explore the idea of a creative class and understand where global citizens who possess these traits have been – as a stratum of society- and where they may be headed.

Online research quickly taught me that the creative class has already lived through a dot.com bubble of sorts, thanks to the hopeful and entrepreneurial vision of Richard Florida, an economist at the Martin Prosperity Institute in Toronto.

In 2002, Florida published a book called the “The Rise of the Creative Class” which espoused the idea that whenever leaders of a floundering metropolitan city wish to revive their economy, they should simply create conditions that attract artistic folks. This makes sense to me. I don’t need charts and graphs to understand how magical the streets of Paris must have felt in the early 20th century. And I recently watched a roomful of auto industry titans agree with instant consensus that Austin, TX would be ideal for their next gathering.

But Florida’s template for success didn’t meet the expectations held by everyone who paid his high consulting fees. While the re-building efforts legitimately could be credited for boosting real estate values in Portland’s Pearl District and Chicago’s Wicker Park, the gestalt of these civic efforts in many cases often “ended up looking something like the metropolitan equivalent to a midlife crisis.”

The economic gains from planting cafes, street musicians and home brewing shops in the middle of cities like Cleveland and Memphis in order to attract “young, largely single, childless and sometimes gay people into urban neighborhoods” paled in the comparison to cities like Pittsburgh and Houston who enjoyed a resurgence due to the natural gas boom.

There are more people who need to pump gas than hear a poetry-reading. I get it. But the world didn’t stop needing web programmers just because Pets.com tanked in 2000.  And the internet has continued to advance very nicely long after Wall Street shifted its investment money over to condominiums in Miami.

So in these blogs I’ll explore other prisms through which this “creative class” people – my group of people – have been (and could be) viewed, exploited, utilized and enriched. Stay tuned.

–Background—

Jason Garner of run.fire.stop offers some great music that can be described using terms like modern, techno, electronica, pop, fun, energetic, moving and inspiring.

–High profile projects or clients you have worked for?

I’ve done a lot of different things in the business, from assisting on a Wynonna Judd record, to playing keyboards on the road with Steve Holy and Blaine Larsen.  I’ve also done drum and keyboard programming work on the Grammy Award Winning children’s record “Songs from the Neighborhood:  The Music of Mister Rogers”.  It was a song that featured the late Donna Summer on vocals.  That was pretty cool.

–Primary instrument? Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?

I’m mainly a keyboard player, using tons of plugs.  I love Omnisphere as well as Kontakt’s “Giant” piano, as well as the LASS strings.  I’ve picked up playing bass over the past couple of years, and play about the heaviest jazz bass I’ve ever known (loaned to me by a friend).

–Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?

ELAM 251.  And someday, I’ll get a P-bass.

–-Film score or song you admire? Why?

There’s a song demo I heard a few years back (passed onto me by a great session vocalist) by a well-known songwriter by the name of Hugh Prestwood.  Never made it onto an album, but every now and then I listen to it and think “that’s from a different planet”!  It’s called “Agave Blue”. Groove, lyric, melody. Everything is just seamless.

–Music education background?

I got a music engineering degree (bachelors in music, minor in electrical engineering) from the University of Miami in Florida.

–Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?

I had an electronic music class where we had to orchestrate a classical work using some obsolete programming software, and I stayed up all through the night perfecting it; I completely lost track of time, and had a blast doing it!

–Most embarrassing music-related moment?

Too many to count.  Playing live still causes me stress, and just about always leads to an embarrassing moment.

–Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

I’m still hopeful.

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

Learn the computer side of things and embrace it.  Just like being able to engineer on any console (Neve, SSL, Trident, etc.) was critical to get work a few years ago, you’ve got to be able to handle the computer and engineering side of things if you want to have enough ways to generate revenue.  And if there’s ANYTHING ELSE you can imagine doing for work that you like more, DO THAT!

–Five songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

I know I’d need at least one Oscar Peterson record.  Beyond that, would be too hard to pick!

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

Guitar

–Any studio collaboration you experienced that stands out in your mind?

I actually got to write a song with Gloria Gaynor a few years ago.  It never went anywhere, but the whole time I was writing with her I was thinking “I Will Survive” over and over again in my head!  And the funniest thing was, she didn’t want to sing the demo!  I ended up hiring a male vocalist to sing.
