–Background

Larry Warren describes himself as more of a songwriter/musician, rather than an artist/performer. Most of Larry’s tunes are contemporary country and contemporary adult pop, with as few of his tracks in the blues and reggae genres.

–Primary instrument?

Acoustic guitar

–Music education background?

I don’t really consider myself an ‘artist/performer’ but more a musician/songwriter. My music education is self-taught.

–If you had a time machine and could record or perform once with any artist, who would it be?

I don’t know about performing, but I wish I was on the roof top when The Beatles performed for the last time.

–Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

Again, I was influenced by The Beatles, and like 1000’s of others, I thought having and playing a guitar would be very cool.

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

If you have the passion, the deep interest, the persistence, and the devotion– go for it/do it. Because once you ‘get it’, and learning a musical instrument is not easy, it will be there for the rest of your life, unlike other things like sports.

–Songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

Abbey Road by The Beatles

White Album by The Beatles

Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits

Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits

The song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

Piano

–A few of your favorite tracks that you would want us to feature in the blog.

If I have to pick a few of my tunes I guess—

‘We’re Getting Married Mix 1’ http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=24637 –that’s my Beatles wanna be song.

‘Me and My Ukulele’ http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=21440 –that’s my nod to George Harrison. He was a huge ukulele fan/player and it was a finalist in a national songwriting contest.

‘I Wanna Be You’ http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=52574 –just an upbeat positive tune.

We thank Larry Warren for sharing some musical background with us and for contributing tracks to MusicRevolution.com, the Royalty-Free Music Marketplace. If you need contemporary country and contemporary adult pop, check out Larry Warren’s music on MusicRevolution.com.

King Solomon, who owned massive piles of gold, famously wrote, “There is nothing new under the sun”. Professional songwriters like me have long had a quiet conspiracy around that idea. And now that one of our own – Tom Petty – has blown the whistle we can enjoy even more ways to lose money as a musician. Awesome.

Late last year Petty’s publishing company reached out to singer Sam Smith and alleged that Smith’s monster 2014 breakout hit:

…was surely a rip-off of Tom’s 1989 hit “Won’t Back Down”:

Sam’s people quickly acquiesced. And now Petty, with his 15 Top 40 hits (the last of which was over 20 years ago), is listed as a co-writer on Sam’s debut hit “Stay With Me”.

The gut reaction I immediately felt and heard from friends both in and out of the music industry was, “Wow. Really?”. It felt like a David/Goliath thing that violated what every musician knows – that everything generated is derivative of something else. Pablo Picasso even once said,
“Good artists borrow, great artists steal”.

This “Petty act” has now moved the threshold, for all songwriters, between what is a commonly used vocabulary of elements (mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard) and what is a signature, copyright-able work (Big Mac special sauce) to a scary place. Musicians who are fortunate enough to strike gold can now look forward to entirely new level of scrutiny in the courtroom with questions like: “Have you ever heard the song you’re being accused of stealing?” (Um…music plays everywhere so probably), “In your academic opinion, (insert name of out-of-touch musicologist), are these songs structurally similar?” (Well, yeah. Every pop song uses the same four chords) and “Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, what verdict do you think will most likely get you an autograph from that iconic celebrity sitting right over there?

Based on this video, I guess Tom Petty has a lot of court dates coming up:

I’ll also guess that when Mr. Petty released his 1976 hit “Breakdown”, some part of him – deep down inside – knew these verses…

….used the exact same melody and chord structure as the verses in this single released by the Animals ten years earlier:

But those are just the musical building blocks we all openly share right, Tom? I guess to you that’s flattery – not imitation.  Whereas Sam Smith and his co-writers, on the other hand, petted their white cats and laughed maniacally as they imported your three-chord progression into Pro Tools, saved themselves a whole lot of time and energy and went down to the pub and enjoyed a drink on your dime right?

Good bust, officer. Good on you.

From a musical standpoint, last week’s most innovative Super Bowl commercial featured no music at all. This Carnival Cruise Lines spot should have been accompanied by huge, epic music. So imagine our surprise when these gorgeous, panoramic shots were underscored by this singular, crackling voice:

John F. Kennedy delivered this speech in 1962 to the participants of America’s Cup – a yacht race in which only Great Britain, Canada and the US had competed up to that point. Australia was participating for the first time so the president was using the occasion as an opportunity to affirm our diplomatic ties with them.

After a humorous account of illegal alcohol trafficking between Rhode Island and Australia in the 1700’s, Kennedy ended his short remarks with:

“The United States and Australia are most intimately bound together today, and I think that — and I speak as one who has had some experience in friendship and some experience in those who are not our friends — we value very much the fact that on the other side of the Pacific the Australians inhabit a very key and crucial area, and that the United States is most intimately associated with them. So beyond this race, beyond the result, rests this happy relationship between two great people.”

It’s hard not to feel wistful when listening to JFK talk about the ocean. In 1943, after his naval vessel was struck by a Japanese ship, young Lt. Kennedy and his surviving crew members had to swim four miles to reach a deserted island where they lived off of coconuts for six days. One of his crew members died. When Kennedy was finally able to reach the authorities, the rescue of his crew was orchestrated by an Australian named Reg Evans.

This speech surely had special meaning to the president. In his calm, thoughtful delivery we hear a man who’s truly feeling what he’s saying.

Here’s to Carnival Cruise Lines, their poetic homage to the sea, and one of the greatest American Presidents the world has ever known.

Sizzle reels, or demo reels, are a great way for companies to deliver a dynamic, multimedia message of what they are all about. In addition to helping convey a corporate message and branding, sizzle reels can be very effective for keeping people engaged while they are waiting to hear a speaker at a corporate event, meeting, conference or tradeshow. We frequently receive requests for suggestions for royalty-free music to be used in “sizzle reels”.

Of course, music to be used for a corporate sizzle reel needs to be cleared for commercial use, otherwise the business risks copyright infringement and potentially incurring significant expenses. A popular song on iTunes for $0.99 is great for consumer or personal use, but it is not cleared for commercial or business use. A business or organization would have to pay significant fee (in the thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars) to use a recognizable popular music song in their sizzle reel. In addition to the high cost, a recognizable track of popular music could potentially be a distraction since popular music like a song by One Republic might be more memorable to your audience than your corporate message.

Descriptive terms like “motivation, “inspiration”, “energy” and “upbeat” come to mind when selecting the right royalty-free music for sizzle reels. We have tagged a select group of tracks that will work well for many sizzle reels. A search on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) for “sizzle reel” yields over 50 tracks—
