In 1997, a team of psychologists at State University of New York gathered a group of men and women into a room and paired them off into couples. They then asked the couples – complete strangers to one another – to look into each others eyes in silence for four minutes. The researchers wanted to see if they could create lab conditions that would make strangers quickly bond and form close friendships after just a few minutes. The numbers speak for themselves; two of the couples ended up married. Eye contact is powerful.

So imagine, as a musician, being told that your music would be used to underscore a similar moment between two of the most beloved characters on TV – a presidential candidate (played by Sam Goldwyn) and his campaign advisor (Kerry Washington) who have fallen into an aching, forbidden love.

“Light” was originally created by Jimmy LaValle, founder of the San Diego based electronic music group Album Leaf and released on their album Into the Blue Again. The track has been used in Channel 4’s series of programmes Disarming Britain, The HBO documentary Love, Marilyn & various advertising campaigns.

As music publishers we’ve observed that every year the licensing world sanctions a list of tracks that
perfectly communicate the emotions that really matter to a story (or a product purchase). The creators of those tracks get the good fortune of seeing their work used everywhere. Coldplay’s “Clocks” comes to mind. As does Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

Our congratulations to Album Leaf for getting on that list in 2012 and being responsible for the track we
think most beautifully expressed “poignant sadness” in 2012.

Comedy is any work intended to be funny, humorous or to amuse by causing laughter, especially in theater, TV, film and stand-up comedy. MusicRevolution.com’s royalty-free music library includes comedy, humorous, funny, quirky, amusing, and slapstick music. We wanted to highlight some of the royalty-free comedy music on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) that could be used for a range of applications including film / movies, documentaries, TV and radio commercials, online video ads, corporate videos, web videos, trade show videos, animations and cartoons. Stock comedy music doesn’t necessarily mean the slapstick, Looney Tunes style of mimicking every onscreen action with a musical change (although this royalty-free music CD has that too). It can also mean a steady, quirky beat and nothing more (we’ve got that too). It can also mean a slow, funeral march underscoring a despondent Woody Allen character after being dumped by yet another stunningly, beautiful actress. This is a fun collection of royalty-free comedy tracks that is worth checking out.

Wedding musicians can’t be late to sound check. Songs must be learned. Sound adjustments must be
made. Wedding coordinators must feel in control.

That’s why first-call Atlanta saxophonist Sam Skelton politely explained to me that, as much as he would
love to play on the track I was producing for Coca Cola, he wouldn’t risk being late to his wedding
gig by recording on a Saturday afternoon.

Naturally, I plugged my ears and obsessed only about making my client happy. Remember when Coca Cola
first started running TV spots in movie theaters? Well I had the privilege of being the first
composer to work with Coke on the concept. And as much as the Lenny Kravitz knock-off I initially
wrote wowed Coke’s Generation X creative director, management deemed it too heavy metal for movie
theaters. Back to the drawing board. And no…the deadline couldn’t move. Work it out, music boy.

So as a replacement I wrote a Kenny Loggins knock-off. And instead of face-melting guitars the track
featured happy trumpets and happy trombones. And on the last 32 bars of chart – mostly out
of laziness and contempt- I just scrawled “ad lib sax solo.”

Deep down Sam knew that my engineer and I would – as with all musicians – nit-pick
his performance, change our minds about creative direction, take breaks to troubleshoot broken gear
and generally make the whole thing all about us. That’s why he knew he would be late to his sound
check.

“30 minutes…tops,” I lied. “We’ll take what we can get. I’ll write parts that aren’t too crazy and
we won’t be all anal about stuff….(add Hollywood agent inflection)…You’re the best, baby. We’ll have
you out of there in no time.”

Sam agreed to do the date, knowing I was full of crap. That’s why he arrived at the session wearing
his wedding tuxedo with a look in his eye that said “Try to keep up, mother f%&*@rs. I have places
to be.”

Back in those days, even the best session players needed a couple passes to really internalize a
track. Engineer Pete Hauenstein and I were rarely at a loss for constructive criticisms to make; it
was just a question of which ones to say first.

So when Sam – while sight-reading the chart and glaring at his watch – ripped through this alto sax
solo on his very first take, we were stunned.

Listen to “My Mutant Power is Saxophone”

Until that moment I wasn’t even aware the instrument could even make those sounds in the altissimo range. After he finished, Pete and I stared through the glass partition, slowly reached up to press the talk back button and
dumbfoundingly muttered, “That’s cool, man. I think………….I think we’re good here.” That performance is one my favorite memories from the jingle days.

Sam continues to gig all over Atlanta; and not just on alto sax, but virtually every woodwind
instrument there is. He has been featured on over 250 CDs and recorded for
Elton John, Matchbox 20, The Gap Band and The Ohio Players.

Hats off to my respected colleague & fellow GSU grad, Sam Skelton, for recording such a kick-ass sax solo. Well done, friend.

–Background

Jon Mortimer is a professional musician with over 30 years of experience in theater, film and television as composer, arranger, musical director and keyboard player. Jon’s music is descriptive and evocative and embraces everything from classical orchestral to present day electronic styles.

–High profile projects or clients you have worked for?

I recently did a 10 part DVD/TV documentary series for Mercedes, otherwise diverse music for ARD and NDR TV in Germany. I compose and arrange a lot for theatre and live shows too, among them being a water circus called Crescend’O which ran for two years at Euro Disney.

–Primary instrument?

Piano

–Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?

Cubase 7. I’ve been using Cubase in its various versions since 1996 and I find I can totally rely on it. I couldn’t do without Sibelius for score writing either.

–Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?

The Cinesamples library and Berlin woodwinds.

–Film score or song you admire? Why?

There are many of course, but the film Ratatouille with music by Micheal Giacchino comes to mind as the music is so full of character and of course superbly orchestrated.

–Music education background?

My high school had a very good music department, so I played guitar with the big band, percussion with the symphony and wind orchestras, keyboards with my own bands, then went on to study piano, conducting and composition at the Leeds College of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire.

–Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?

Realising you can get totally different chords just by changing the bass note.

–Most embarrassing music-related moment?

Probably when I turned up to a gig and opened my flight case to find there was no keyboard inside. That was embarrassing.

–Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

From the age of 11 I was totally absorbed in music. From then on, music was it for me I think.

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

Develop your skills and knowledge as early as possible in the area that you want to make a career out of, and then get to know as many professional people in that area as you can to inspire and help you step in.

–Five songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

Beatles White Album

Beethoven complete Piano Sonatas by Willhelm Kempf

Noa

Gino Vanelli Night Walker

Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto played by Vladimir Ashkenasi with the LSO

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

I play guitar reasonably well but always wish I could play it better.

–Favorite time of day to work in your studio?

Anytime is good really, but mornings are definitely good.

–Any studio collaboration you experienced that stands out in your mind?

My first big studio production to record a full soundtrack with pretty much everything still to learn about hard disk recording.

–Some of your favorite tracks that you would want us to feature in the blog.

Dramatic Opener http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=14976 is a very bad title for a piece that was actually written a long time ago as an overture for a Musical called Rias Wish. It features solo trumpet by Larry Elam, a friend and great player of international status, who sadly died in a car accident a few years ago.

To Look Back On Love http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=23903 was originally intended as a song, but I reworked it as a violin solo with strings and classical guitar accompaniment and would make a strong theme or closing music for a serious dramatic film. The solo is played by Matthias Bromman, who recorded it in one take with great expression and phrasing.

It Had To Be http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=53319 is the last piece I submitted. There’s a trend to begin pieces with a repeated open 4th figure so I thought I’d do one too and see where it went to.

The Burden of War http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=23902 was a track that I wrote as a MusicRevolution track demo for a video about war veterans and it ended up in an industrial film produced in South Africa.

I’d like to thank Music Revolution, Mike and Chris, for your support and interest in my music.

We thank Jon Mortimer for sharing some of his musical background with us and for contributing his tracks to MusicRevolution.com, the Royalty-Free Music Marketplace. If you need dramatic, descriptive and evocative music ranging from classical orchestral to present day electronic styles, check out Jon Mortimer’s music on MusicRevolution.com.

Non-musicians often guage the talent of musicians by asking them how many instruments they play. It’s an easy way to make conversation and an easy number to count. As a rule, I always refrain from saying what I really think. A gallon of water can be poured into several glasses or one big jug. Either way it’s still a gallon of water.

Multi-media artists who traverse across different artistic disciplines think that way too. Someone like Tom Waits – both a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter and Golden Globe nominated actor – sees it all as the same energy source. Where it’s being pointed at any given time is between him and whoever’s paying his fee. Whatever boxes and labels the audiences must put him for their world to make sense is probably fine with him.

This Android commercial features the song “Party Hard” – a metal anthem by an artist whom I think represents the next evolution of cross-discipline artists in the creative class.

Andrew W.K is a musician, TV show producer, motivational speaker, TV commentator and – in my opinion- the best advice columnist since Dear Abbey. I’m not kidding. One perusal of the weekly column Andrew writes for The Village Voice reveals a mind with serious horsepower. The responses he provides to super-deep questions like
“Should I Feel Guilty for Being White?”, “How Do I Find a Best Friend?” & “How Do I Keep the Demons In My Mind At Bay?” are empathetic and practical. He’s processed the crippling scars most of us have borne by adulthood in a way that yields an antibody the rest of can mass-produce and use.

Be sure to check out Andrew W.K.’s advice column at
http://www.villagevoice.com/related/to/Andrew+W.K./

Kudos to Android for featuring music by an artist with this kind of depth.

The “Select Influences” feature is one of the innovative aspects of the “Advanced Search” function on MusicRevolution.com.

While musicians and music buyers may describe music by using terms such as “classical”, “orchestral”, “symphonic”, “cinematic”, “inspiring” and “strings”, they often think of the production music that they are looking for based on the sound and feel of a popular artist or band, such as Coldplay, or a famous composer such as John Williams or Hans Zimmer. This is why we built the “Select Influences” option into the “Advanced Search” on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com).

For example, if you are trying to find a royalty-free track that sounds or feels like music by John Williams of “Star Wars” fame, click on “Select Influences” in the “Advanced Search” on MusicRevolution.com, scroll down and click on “John Williams”, then click “Search”. The search for “John Williams” yields over 500 royalty-free tracks that were influenced by John Williams
