–Background

In 2000, Vincent and composer partner Kathyjo Varco formed the music production house Big Sound Music and released a collection of compositions, ranging from quirky lullaby’s through truly-funky street rhythms, all the way to earnest and quite moving orchestral themes.

Vince Varco initially scored several campaigns for political guru David Axelrod, and then broke into broadcast television with compositions for Speed Channel, Discovery and The History Channel. His knowledge of music, at its core, shows through in his sensibilities when writing for any genre and has a way of tapping in with precision. Rooted in classical music, Vince has proven his skills as a well-rounded composer in the music field. He’s best known around Chicago for his hard-hitting delivery with Rock and Reggae bands and earned a Chicago Musicians Award for “Best Keyboardist” by the Illinois Entertainer.

Composer/songwriter Kathyjo combines her many musical influences, ranging from Pink Floyd to Billy Holiday, along with a life time of performance to create broad palettes of music for Big Sound Music. Her compositions have been featured on the Discovery Channel and CMT to name a few, and her clever jingle writing has left quite a few of us unwittingly humming along. An innovative songwriter, Kathyjo’s firm grasp of nearly every musical style gives any track that ‘instant recognition’ factor lacking in so many brands today.

The following are Vince Varco’s responses to our interview questions—

–High profile projects or clients you have worked for?

I’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies like P&G, Cisco, Disney, and General Motors as well as some high profile political campaigns like Patrick Kennedy, and Richard Daley. Ad agencies, marketing agencies, independent film companies as well as touring and recording with many bands across the spectrum including some well-knowns like reggae artist Ziggy Marley.

–Primary instrument?

Piano, Organ, Keyboards

–Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?

VSL- Will wonders never cease!

–Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?

Dangerous Music 2-Buss

–Film score or song you admire? Why?

The list is long but generally of a unique and lasting nature. I admire any production that either pushes the boundary, makes an indelible mark, or gives the listener something to hold on to.

–Music education background?

I was privately educated from age 7-18 in Classical and Jazz piano, sight-reading, harmony, and composition. I spent a further 4 years in college studying composition, electronic music, and social sciences. The rest I learned by just being curious and paying attention.

–Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?

When I realized while practicing at age 8 that for me it would be better to be the one putting the notes on the page than to be the one playing them.

–Most embarrassing music-related moment?

I once opened a show with a 5 min solo piano improvisation and upon the applause was supposed to make my way back to the keyboard rig which involved a minefield of monitors, dancers, other musicians, etc. Being as this was unrehearsed I found I was so blinded by the solo spotlight that when the stage went dark I stumbled and bumbled my way to great effect back to my next mark. Quite a noisy journey, and very embarrassing!

–If you had a time machine and could record or perform once with any artist, who would it be?

Beethoven

–Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

At my very first piano lesson when my teacher played and I was so thrilled by the sound I knew that for me there was nothing else.

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

Beat that interest right out of them and see if they are still game….ultimately that is what it will take to keep getting up and keeping on in the music business. You need to be willing to sacrifice your whole life with no guarantee of success and also a success that is constantly fleeting and need constant attention to maintain.

–Five songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

Beethoven’s complete symphonies (Chicago Symphony Orchestra – Solti)

To be honest, I rarely listen to other music anymore as when I am not working on my own music I need to let the brain and ears cool. This is part of the love-hate relationship that is fostered by a musical career. I would probably just enjoy the quiet and the music of nature.

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

Drums

–Favorite time of day to work in your studio?

12pm-10pm

–Any studio collaboration you experienced that stands out in your mind?

Assisting composer Bill Russo on a Stan Kenton Redux at Capital Records. In spite of the big budget, the accolades of even being asked to do such a thing, the great recording space and musicians, Mr. Bill canned the whole project much to the producer’s chagrin because the session players, although the best, were too ‘straight’ and couldn’t get the right ‘feel’ to do the music justice. As Bill said, “What is the point of recreating something that is less than what already has been recorded.” Very valuable lessons there.

–Some of your favorite tracks that you would want us to feature in the blog.

“Noctis Vigiliam” http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=53294

“Triumphatori” http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=53293

–Which of your tracks sell well?

I have tracks in many genres. For filmmakers, my scoring does well and as do my techno bombs. For DIY Youtubers, the more cliched seems to do well. There is no telling.

Over time I predict a question will come up more frequently in the minds of music-creators: Should I join SoundExchange? Will I make any money by joining?
After tracking the court proceedings that have stemmed from Pandora’s emergence on the music scene – and after speaking with a SoundExchange representative this week to better understand how they operate vs. ASCAP, I’d have to say that generally the answer is “yes.”
And if your music is currently being played on Pandora or Spotify; and you own the master recordings, then the answer becomes “absolutely yes!”
Streaming services like Pandora and Spotify need content from the major labels (remember them?). Years ago, when those licensing conversations began, the entity who negotiated on behalf of the major labels was SoundExchange. After all, they had already been doing it for years in terrestrial radio (remember that?).

And negotiate they did. SoundExchange promptly influenced US legislation to ensure they would be deemed the nationwide administrator of all “sound recording” royalties whenever said sound recordings were digitally transmitted in a “non-interactive” way (basically the listener can’t select which song they hear).

Congress gave SoundExchange a big ‘ole stick that they weren’t afraid to use. Once the leglislation was in place, they decided to charge Pandora 50% of revenue. You could almost hear Spotify’s investors crying over their leatherbound business plan packets.

Although SoundExchange initially won this tug-of-war initially on behalf of major labels, they have wisely chosen to extend their royalty collection power to small/unknown labels & artists like us. They’re fighting for the little guy…..and winning. Whereas performing rights organizations like ASCAP & BMI are constrained from collecting any serious money from digital stream services due to an outdated court ruling, SoundExchange saw streaming technology coming years ago and perfectly positioned themselves to be the financial gatekeeper. They took a page from the same playbook  the Harry Fox agency used when phonographs first came into existence (we’ll talk about that in a later blog).
You’ll see similarities between your PRO membership and your SoundExchange membership: Both memberships are free. Both have a clause that permits you to negotiate deals directly with music buyers when that’s in your best interest (as publishers, we like that flexibility…alot). SoundExchange does not conflict with any PRO membership you may currently have. You can have both.
There is a difference between the exact part of your track for which ASCAP will claim its jurisdiction and that which SoundExchange will (I explain that here). But over time that distinction will only become relevant to major labels and music deals where there are multiple fingers in the pie .
So get your free membership to SoundExchange, comrade. And get piece of mind in knowing that the company who’s actually getting decent checks from the big digital streaming providers is mandated by law to turn around and remit that money to you.

In 1952, composer John Cage debuted a 3-movement piece wherein the musicians were instructed not to
play their instruments at all. The concept was to allow whatever ambient noise occurred in the concert
hall during the 4′ 33″ duration of the piece to serve as the music. It was a philosophical statement
that made newspaper headlines and generated passionate commentary from critics and audience-members alike. One of those comments was, “I could’ve written that myself!”

That’s how my ego feels when I hear super-simple songs like this one used in a great TV commercials:

The song is “Clash” by Caravan Palace, a collective of DJs and producers based in Paris, France who
specialize in the genre called electro-swing. This is one of those brilliant song licensing choices
that works not because the singer sounds good; or the musicianship is stellar; or the composition is
clever; but rather because the singers’s voice just sounds interesting. It’s like seeing a shade of
blue on an Italian sports car unlike any shade of blue you’ve ever seen…you can’t stop looking at it.

Here’s a similar Diet Coke spot by the same ad agency – New York-based Droga5 (clients include UNICEF, Under Armour, Healthcare.gov & Spotify. The song is “Suit” by the Australian band Boom! Bap! Pow!:

Once again, this is not the kind of skilled singing that would compel any judges on The Voice to mash
their red button and spin the chair around. But as John Cage pricelessly replied when all the Muggles
roared, “I could’ve written that!”……….”I never said you couldn’t.”

In recent years most musicians I know have seen their living costs go up as their fees have stayed exactly the same. One of these musicians I know read Robert T. Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad Poor Dad and promptly shifted his life energy into aquiring stuff that generates residual income – like condominiums. He shifted to a “rental income” model rather than a “labor income” model.

I’ve made lots of dumb mistakes trying to get the same kind of royalty checks Andrew Lloyd Weber gets. Perhaps the biggest of those mistakes was not watching my costs. I once incurred a ton of business debt in order to launch a coupon code website that was poorly researched, under-funded, unoriginal, and had a manager – that would be me – who had no passion whatsoever for the coupon business. What I learned from that mistake is that expenses saved on the left side of the ledger are the same as income earned on the right side of the ledger.

So after seeing this incredible Ted Talk by YouTube’s Kevin Allocca I decided to utilitize my hard-earned wisdom by creating a hit song for under $1,000:

The result is this novelty song, which I wrote and produced specifically for enjoyment/use by parents who are potty-training their kids:

My relationship with this song right now is complicated. I realize no one wants to actually think about poopy diapers. Creative colleagues who have watched the video looked down at their shoes and unconvincingly murmered “That’s great, man.” It took an overseas animation team almost 12 months to deliver a video that not a single person has ever watched and said “That’s awesome!”.

But the real estate has been developed. And a baited hook now bobs in the water of our pop culture with a fishing line that leads to my pole.

Is there any hope for my little $1,000 ditty?

Here’s what I tell myself: In 1983 Paramount Pictures found itself deeply invested in a film in which no one believed. A young, untested producer handed the studio what journalist Soraya Roberts called a “thinly disguised life-support system for a music video”. Critics panned the film and – just to hedge their bets – Paramount sold 25% of the film rights before it was even released.

The film was Flashdance. It’s soundtrack went on to sell over 6 million copies. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said he had no idea that all the dim lighting – made necessary to help conceal all the body-doubling – would become the stylstic key to one of MTV’s most heavily rotated videos. Michael Eisner – then president of Paramount – had no idea that Jennifer Beal’s frantic on-set decision to cut up her sweatshirt – after it shrank in the dryer – would become a look adopted by every pre-teen girl America that year.

Nobody knows anything.

So here’s to crossing the finish line with my song “Poopy Diaper” and just getting the damn thing done. And here’s to tired parents – in every country in the world – who don’t care how annoying my $1,000 song is. They just want their kids to start using the damn toilet.
