At a time when YouTube is the 2nd most used search engine in the world and my 11-year old knows 25 viral videos off the top of his head, this electronic dance music band from Great Britain has found an incredibly effective way to market a song. Just try and watch this sports highlight video without sucked into Hadouken’s super-catchy chorus:

Didn’t realize the whole purpose of the video was to market a song called “Levitate”? This is what we internet folks call “content marketing”…essentially web content that is so useful people would theoretically pay for it.

So how was it possible for the band to use all this footage from a rights perspective? Based on the number of attribution links to the original video sources as well as YouTube’s strict “3 strikes you’re out” policy, this author is assuming the band either took the time to obtain permission from all the rights holders…or carefully chose content created only by rights holders participating in YouTube’s revenue sharing program (perhaps a combination of both).

Copyright permissions are a serious business on YouTube because of their “copyright strike” policy. If a user’s account has had content removed three times based on “complete and valid removal requests from copyright holders”, then that user’s account will be suspended for 6 months.

I think this is brilliant marketing on Hadouken’s part. Their video strategy accumulated 75M+ YouTube views and went viral in at least one Atlanta elementary school. Well done, mates.

A few years ago I wrote a short blog series (Part I & Part II) that summarized and reviewed Dan Levitin’s excellent book The World in Six Songs (2009 Penguin Press). Levitin made the compelling case that music served a key role in mankind’s evolution from caves to condominiums.

Human beings, at a societal level, have specific social, psychological and logistical needs that can only be met by communicating with one another through song. It sounds touchy-feely, but Levitin makes his argument through an empirical, academic lens that cites peer-recognized studies conducted in the fields of neuroscience, anthropology and psychiatry. Good stuff.

Levitin goes one step further and even breaks down the music that helped us evolve into six types of songs that really resonate with us: love songs, religious songs, knowledge songs, friendship songs, joy songs, comfort songs.

So after writing about the music business for many years now and living in what is pretty much a fully digital world that markets to me constantly, I would posit to Mr. Levitin that a seventh type of song needs to be added to his list:

Background:

Sergey Rybytskky’s musical influences cover a broad range from Alice Cooper to Marty Friedman. The primary motivation for Sergey’s music is to create an emotional experience for the listener that is original, lively and refined. Rybytskyy’s main instrument of choice is the keyboard, but he also uses a variety of other instruments which allows a wide range of synthetic and authentic sounds. Sergey Rybytskyy’s instrumental music unites the elements of classical and progressive rock beats into a sound that is cinematic and is often used for soundtracks.

Some Questions We Asked Sergey:

–High profile projects or clients you have worked for?

I have signed an agreement on a non-exclusive basis with approximately 20 music libraries and music publishers. At the same time, I have concluded 3 treaties on exclusive basis with TJC Communications Publishing (BMI) (USA), The Guitar Library (PRS) (UK), and Soundtaxi GmbH (GEMA) (Germany).

–Primary instrument? –Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?

 Keyboards.

Shreddage – Electric Rhythm Guitar,  Electri6ity, Superior Drummer v2, (libraries for Kontakt)

–Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?

 Real Full Orchestra

–Film score or song you admire? Why?

“Jewel” by Marty Friedman & Jason Becker.

This song is contemplative, dreamy, romantic, and sublime. The composers have put their whole soul into the song. This song is kindly and highly artistic.

–Music education background?

I went in for music at the age of 7. I decided to master the piano that was in our home. And before that I liked to listen to music. After 2 years of my independent studies I was admitted to the last grade of the music school. Then after a short break, I connected with mastering another engineering specialty. I then entered the second course of the Dnepropetrovsk Music College where I got acquainted with a wonderful composer and teacher V. Skuratovsky who has been giving me private lessons in harmony, polyphony and composition.

–Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?

I like to improvise on piano and once I was so carried away by the process that I absolutely forgot about cooking preparation. As a result, the concoction was spoiled. It was scorched baked pudding.

 –Most embarrassing music-related moment?

It all happened way back in the 90ies when I was studying in the musical college. I appeared on the stage before onlookers. It was in the concert hall that I performed the musical compositions on piano. I invited many mates and fellows. It was crammed, congested and crowded in the hall. While performing I heard harsh sharp creak. Being addicted to reproduce any squeak and any moan after listening Steve Vai’s music I repeated the creak on piano.  Although the audience clapped for me, as a result I got a C for my performance and for my freak.

–If you had a time machine and could record or perform once with any artist, who would it be?

 Jason Becker.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Becker

He has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It has crippled his body and speech, but not his mind.

–Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

 After Glinka Musical College graduation

–Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

Never surrender!

Furthermore, try to combine various musical genres in your music. From my point of view music should express some feelings. And feelings may be different.

I consider it essential to put my whole soul into compositions. I always try to represent romantic principle, particularly, different emotions such as gladness, anxiety, etc. In general, help other people as far as possible, respect different opinions and never act against your conscience.

–Five songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

I am delighted with classical and progressive rock music.

Bach – Messe H-Moll

Rhapsody of Fire – The Frozen Tears Of Angels (album 2010)

Marty Friedman – Introduction (album 1994)

Tony Macalpine – Maximum Security (album 1987)

Joe Satriani – Surfing With The Alien (album 1987)

–If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

Guitar

–Favorite time of day to work in your studio?

24 hours per day

–Any studio collaboration you experienced that stands out in your mind? Why?

Collaboration with my old fellow Roman Daniels. He is a fascinating, amazing guitarist. Roman took part in recording some my compositions. He is a first-class guitarist and I plan to record our teamwork sooner or later.

–2 or 3 of your favorite tracks that you would want us to feature in the blog.

Earlier this week we announced the grand opening of our new and improved online forums. And it’s a long time coming. As we were preparing press releases and emails to announce this overhaul the working title in my head was “Our forums don’t suck anymore!”.

In fact they’re way cool now.

Check out this video embed feature that video producers can use to post their rough edits then ask our musicians to provide sound track ideas.

Or see how you just can embed inspiring YouTube videos like this.

Are you working on a project that requires skills not quite in your wheelhouse? Embed a URL that points to your rough audio tracks and ask other musicians for help….like this

Want to share a graphic? Check out this sample post where I provide music notation for what is only the prettiest minor chord voicing ever you’ve ever played.

Got a gripe? Talk to us here.

Staying connected makes us better at what we do. Come in and talk to each other.

Background:

Dean Daughters is the songwriter and composer behind Prizm Prime. Dean has been an electronic music producer for over 16 years. Drums are Dean’s main instrument, so Prizm Prime’s music tends to be very rhythm oriented. Dean writes electronic music in many genres: downtempo, trip-hop, chill-out, breaks, trance, house, techno, trance, orchestral & more. Prizm Prime mixes different styles together and does not follow “genre rules”!

Some Questions We Asked Dean of Prizm Prime:

Primary instrument?

The drums have always been my main instrument.  I knew when I was about five years old that I wanted to be a drummer.  My love for all music only grew over the years, and I wanted to be able to make my own complete music pieces from the ground up, so I learned how to write, produce and mix all kinds of music and to play guitar and keyboards as well.

Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?

Hands down – Alchemy VST instrument from Camel Audio.  This beast of a sampler/synth hybrid is simply amazing — versatile and inspiring to work with.  Spending only a few minutes fiddling around with Alchemy will surely spark new musical ideas and give me fresh creative direction.  One of the reasons I like it so much is that it works for so many different genres of electronic music.  That’s me on any given day, always something different – anything from downtempo, dub & chillout to dancefloor house and trance BANGERS! Alchemy always seems to “fit” with the kind music I want to make.  The sonic richness and overall quality of sound(s) it can produce is nothing short of STELLAR.

Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?

Right now I just would like to get more sound libraries for the Alchemy VST instrument!

Film score or song you admire? Why?

I’m a big fan of the soundtrack for the independent art-house movie, “PI” written and directed by Darren Aronofsky. Clint Mansell did the soundtrack and not only am I a big fan of Clint’s music, I find it very inspiring to see the front-man from the English alternative rock band, “Pop Will Eat Itself” move forward in this direction with his music production(s).

Music education background?

I taught myself to play the drums through years of listening to music and endless practice.  I took school band in junior high school.  Took a few guitar and keyboard lessons while in high school to get me started with those instruments, and I taught myself through much trial and error how to mix and produce full musical compositions.  I also took some music theory and studio recording classes in college.

Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?

One day when playing the drums in junior high school band class, I had a strange realization that if I could think of a beat in my head, I could effortlessly get my hands and feet to co-operate and play it.  It was a “magic moment” to say the least and will always be remembered.  It just happened – one minute I was struggling to get both hands and feet to co-operate simultaneously, then BAMM – it just happened.  My drumming ability really took off from that day forward.

Most embarrassing music-related moment?

That’s an easy one! One night while performing a live gig in a techno duo I was in, we had the place JUMPIN’!  EVERYBODY came out to the dance floor for one of our up-tempo 4-on-the-floor tracks.  Girls were taking off their shoes and making piles of their jackets and purses so they could DANCE to the music we were putting out. For some reason, I thought it might be a good idea to give everyone a quick breather, so we played one of our downtempo tracks as the next number — and we CLEARED THE FLOOR.  You’ve never seen a packed dance-floor clear-out so quickly.  lol – I’ll NEVER make that mistake again!

If you had a time machine and could record or perform once with any artist, who would it be?

I don’t need a time machine for this one — I’ve always wanted to play drums for Peter Gabriel!!

Moment you first knew you would be a musician?

When I was about 5.  I’ve never wanted to be anything else.  It must be in my blood.

Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?

This is hard advice to hear for a lot of musicians (especially ones who are young), but — I heard somewhere when I was just starting to write my own music that you should write 100 songs and THROW THEM AWAY. THEN and ONLY THEN can you start to write GOOD music.  That was a long time ago, but I’ve done just that. I’ve written well over 100 pieces of music that I never released, honing my skills and learning the craft the entire time.  Looking back – it’s that kind of “Mr. Miagi Zen training” that’s shaped who I am today as a musician.

Five albums you’d take with you to a desert island?

Now that’s a tough one!

“Never Loved Elvis” from The Wonderstuff (my ALL-TIME favorite band).

“Strangeways Here We Come” from The Smiths.

“Fear” or “Dulcinea” from Toad The Wet Sprocket.

“Are YouNormal” from Ned’s Atomic Dustbin.

“Second Toughest in the Infants” from Underworld (I Just gotta have my techno, too!)

Can I squeeze in a sixth? ANY album from Billy Bragg!

If you could master another instrument, what would it be?

Something ethnic for sure – maybe the Sitar?

Favorite time of day to work in your studio?

Evenings and nights are always good, as the vibe is nice!  The birds are quieter (for clean recording with microphones) and the neighbors usually aren’t sawing or grinding on anything – lol!

What are your best, or even favorite tracks? Why?

That’s very difficult to answer as my catalog stands at hundreds of finished music track over the years, but I’m really proud of “Flute Fantasy” right now – it has wonderful instrumentation and lovely melodies with Cellos, horns and flute! Click here to listen to “Flute Fantasy”

http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=35939

 Any last words?

As a final thought – I just want to let all your customers and clients know that I can alter just about any piece of my music to suit their specific needs.  I can make tracks longer or shorter, change tempo(s), add or remove instruments and create alternate and/or “remixed” versions, too.  Thanks!

We thank Dean for sharing some of his musical background with us and for contributing Prizm Prime’s tracks to MusicRevolution.com, the Production Music Marketplace. The next time you need rhythm oriented electronic music in a range of genres– downtempo, trip-hop, chill-out, breaks, trance, house, techno, trance, orchestral & more– check out Prizm Prime’s tracks on MusicRevolution.com.
