We’d all like to think that bands live in an economic bubble and just wake up everyday just for the music. And that being placed in the center of an international ad campaign doesn’t affect the music thereafter. But it does. All gossip among musicians hangs on name-dropping. Many of us creative folks base entire career decisions on how many recognizable brands or peers were mentioned in a single conversation.

No doubt the word “Heineken” has by now become a big part of the conversation for an Australian-based band called Clairy Browne & the Bangin Rackettes.

A little over a year ago, the band was promoting their self-titled debut album (available on iTunes) when they caught word of a music search being conducted by Heineken’s ad agency TBWA. A few sessions later (I suspect) this amazing song was produced, which has the retro appeal of a brand new, big-ass bedroom dresser coated with antique gel:

The creative team at TBWA, Sander Volleman and Niels de Kuiper, was kind of enough to answer our request for an interview about this incredible music-driven spot:

Q: Is this commercial part of a larger creative campaign? If so, how does it tie into TBWA’s overall strategy for the Heineken brand?

A: The Switch is part of the ‘Star Serve’ campaign in which Heineken demonstrates its passion and love for beer and the ‘perfect serve’. The message is that when Heineken is served perfectly, the beer tastes better and there is a big difference that you can actually taste. In addition to the television commercial, the campaign comprises other elements including a Facebook app and a ‘Star Serve’ B2B program that gives bars the chance to gain Star Serve status.

Q: How did you first discover the Clairy Browne song? For example, was it submitted by an outside company as part of a commissioned music search? Or did perhaps someone at the agency have a connection to the artist?

A: We looked for a song that would fit the retro-chic feel of the classy bar, while at the same time would add to the raw mechanic changes happening throughout the film. We felt the score also had to be catchy. And that the artist should be someone who is relatively unknown, but who has international potential. Clairy Browne was spot on.

Q: Are there any outside companies you would like to acknowledge for the audio/music production?

A: Massive Music introduced us to the raspy retro sound of Clairy Browne and her Bangin’ Rackettes. As for the audio in the commercial, we wanted it to capture the realness of all the revolving walls and collapsing floors. It has to be impressive and big, but without becoming too bombastic. It’s not a Hollywood special effects commercial; it’s oily machinery and greasy bolts. We think the sound engineers of The Ambassadors did a great job.

Q: Were other songs considered for the commercial that
made it a tough decision? We know there can sometimes be a
lot of back-and-forth debate during this process. (*For some
reason we never get a juicy answer on this one. LOL*).

A: We are suckers for juicy stories, and we’re certainly familiar with
back-and-forth debates. But in this case, we’re sad – and happy to be
honest – to say that Clairy Browne was our favorite from the beginning. It is funny that every detail in the commercial was debated and discussed. The lights, the clothes, the little ornaments on the wall – everything. Except the music. Everyone agreed on it immediately.

Q: Any fun stories to share about the creative process while
conceiving, shooting or doing post-production for this commercial?

A: We thought we knew what it felt like to witness a script coming to life on a
set. But that all changed when we experienced the process with a line like “And then we throw in a shark”. Or: “From under the floor, the singer (head down) rotates into frame”. It was great fun.

We at MusicRevolution.com tip our business-strategy hats to the folks at TWBA for integrating the word “B2B” into this campaign. Folks can’t drink the beer if the bar owner doesn’t stock it. Well done there, mates.

Quick note to Clairy:

When I watch your band’s YouTube videos, it seems you sometimes have a nervous look in your eye, as if you’re expecting that villian from the Little Mermaid to show up at any minute and demand that beautiful voice back.

Listen to me, honey. No one’s gonna take that voice away. In fact, Heineken built an entire TV commercial around it. Look me in the eye and sing right into my guts. You deserve to be there.

The “Select Influences” feature is one of the innovative aspects of the “Advanced Search” function on MusicRevolution.com. While musicians and music buyers may describe music by using terms such as “orchestral”, “rock”, “energetic” and “electric guitar”, they often think of the production music that they are looking for based on the sound and feel of a popular band, such as The Rolling Stones, or a famous composer such as John Williams. This is why we built the “Select Influences” feature into the “Advanced Search” on MusicRevolution.com.

As an example, if you are looking for a royalty-free music track that sounds or feels like music by John Williams, click on “Select Influences” in the “Advanced Search” on MusicRevolution.com, scroll down and click on “John Williams”, then click “Search”.

The search results for “John Williams” returns the following 268 royalty-free tracks that were influenced by John Williams

If any member of the original ratpack, including Sinatra, were sent forward in time to 2012 and beamed directly to a Logic seminar at an Apple Store, Willy Moon will be the result.

This rail-thin, New Zealander has one foot firmly placed in the pre-rock n’ roll big band era where tons of 10-second samples of actual live musicians can be found. His other foot is placed in the bleeding edge of music software where those samples can be infused with crazy beats and get used in iTunes commercials.

Tracks like this are an even deeper step into what Moby was doing in the 90’s. Taking old, classic ingredients that feel familiar and acceptable, pouring them through a sieve, then spreading the extract out across a rhythmic landscape that begs you to either make-out with someone or buy a car. Your choice.

Willy Moon employs the same philosophy, but clearly expects far less of his audience’s time. His website claims his songs rarely cross the 3-minute mark. And based on the wonderful flashiness of “Yeah Yeah”, his art was designed to say everything that needs to be said before the elevator ride to the ADHD doctor’s office is complete.

Here’s a MusicRevolution retro hip hop stock music track that media producers can use if they want to affordably emulate this musical effect.

I once read an Esquire magazine interview with a famous actress who said, “When women are on a 1st date they should watch how the guy eats. If he takes his time and savors the meal then he’s probably a good lover.”

The 1996 film Big Night, written and co-directed by Stanley Tucci and hailed by Roger Ebert as “one of the great food movies”, is much like a great meal. You have to slow down and really take it in.

In the film, there is an incredible usage of the public domain song “Tic Ti, Tic Ta” performed by Claudio Villa at the height of the big night around which our storyline revolves.  The owners of a struggling Italian restaurant in the 1950’s have staked everything on a single party to which famous singer Louis Prima has been invited. Their hope is that the pop star will love the meal, spread the word and save their business.

Reportedly, Stanley Tucci began working on Big Night while working on a film project he hated. I’m thinking craft services may have been one of the issues.

Big Night really is a movie where food is a character in the story. Those amazing dinner entrees are not just plates of food, but rather a symbol of two brothers trying to live the dream. The wonderfully wordless scene at the end of the movie is not just Tucci’s character making an omelet. It’s him extending an olive branch to his brother after a fistfight.

This isn’t artsy abstraction, fellas. This is a movie that could make you a better lover.

Hats off to Stanley Tucci and co-director Campbell Scott and singer Claudio Villa for an outstanding music synchronization. Here’s a royalty-free mambo track that could also work for media producers who want to achieve this same festive mood, but have voice over on top.

My colleague Joel Zimmerman has experienced something that many of us have not…he’s stayed up all night shuffling parts around in a music program (let’s assume it’s Logic) so that the following night throngs of beautiful, under-the-influence, colorfully costumed twenty-somethings could lose their minds hanging on every note, every part, every build-up, every vocal sample . Joel didn’t realize that his time slot during the show was shorter than usual so adjustments had to be made.

He was furious.

When a career-defining moment, or even season, is happening in our lives we are often unaware of it. Most of us are focused on the urgency of the moment and can’t mentally pull the camera back and fully see what’s happening.

Here’s what’s happening: My colleague Joel Zimmerman (now known as DeadMau5 – pronounced “dead mouse”), who I once thought of as a  hyper-opinionated, super-talented insomniac living somewhere in Canada, is now  a full-on international rock star. He is regularly shuttled to dance venues all over the globe commanding six figure fees to play music that has been sculpted by his own gifted, well-traveled musical mind.  He knows exactly what to make a computer do so that thousands of bodies will jump up and down at the same time. That is wicked cool.

And so it is with great pleasure I announce that here on MusicRevolution.com, we offer a collection of over 100 royalty-free tracks written by Joel Zimmerman (now known as DeadMau5) for licensing in your media projects.

How is this possible? Many moons ago, Joel was commissioned by music publisher KillTheSilence to create tracks for their production music library. KillTheSilence controls the rights to those tracks and has graciously uploaded that music to MusicRevolution. Therefore, that music is available to our customers under the same easy-to-understand, royalty-free license terms as the other 18,000+ tracks on our site. Legal circumstances such as this are kind of rare so if I were a music buyer I’d start grabbing these tracks immediately.

Click here to check out MusicRevolution tracks created by Joel Zimmerman (now known as DeadMau5)

When you listen to these tracks you’ll notice that many of them are in loop format. They don’t have stingers at the end and many of them are shorter than one-minute.  This is because they were specifically written to be used by Flash developers who require their licensed in an unique format.

Interestingly, this format will also work well for media producers who want to feature a Joel Zimmerman “element” in their work. It could be a song that uses the loop as its primary element. It could be a video that uses the loop only as an introduction before segueing into another piece of music. The creative possibilities are pretty endless.

So here’s to our friend Joel, who made it to the Big Show….and left behind some goodies.

Congratulations on your well-earned success, Mr. Zimmerman. You stayed focused. You never stopped cranking out great music. And now you’re living the dream.  Well done, sir. When you’re ready to crank out some more TV music, please come back and see us.

Comedy (from the Greek: kōmōidía), in the contemporary meaning of the term, is any discourse or work generally intended to be humorous or to amuse by inducing laughter, especially in theatre, television, film and stand-up comedy, according to Wikipedia. Our production music library contains comedy, humorous, funny, quirky, amusing music and more. We thought that we would highlight some of the royalty-free comedy music on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) that could be used for a range of purposes including film/movies, documentaries, TV and radio commercials, online video ads, corporate videos, web videos, trade show videos, animations and cartoons. It is often said that laughter is the best medicine. If that is the case, then we have a lot of “medicine” in the MusicRevolution.com production music library!

A search on MusicRevolution.com for “comedy” yields over 1,500 royalty-free production music tracks—

MusicRevolution.com also has a number of CDs, available in both physical CD and download CD formats, with hand-selected royalty-free music tracks. We have a great collection of royalty-free comedy music on “Comedy, Vol. 1” –
http://www.musicrevolution.com/cd_details/comedy_vol_1/ . Stock comedy music doesn’t necessarily mean the slapstick, Looney Tunes style of mimicking every onscreen action with a musical change (although this production music CD has that too). It can also mean a steady, quirky beat and nothing more (got that too). It can also mean a slow, funeral march underscoring a despondent Woody Allen character after being dumped by yet another stunningly, beautiful actress. This is a fun collection of royalty-free comedy tracks that are really worth checking out.

With over 18,000 tracks of royalty-free music online in our production music library, MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) has the production music that you need.
