Years ago one of our best UK-based musicians, Sirius Child (creator of the awesome royalty-free downtempo track “Recline” , tipped us off about an emerging style of music called dubstep.  It’s a sub-genre of electronica that exploits low frequency ranges to a groin-tickling degree that’s never been done before.

According Vance Kelly, a professional live sound consultant, “50 to 90 Hertz is that frequency range where a well-tuned sound system will make your mid-section feel all wobbly.” After hearing this music pumped through the 28,000+ watt sound system at Atlanta’s Verizon Amphitheater last year during a Bassnector show, I fully understand why hormonal college students attend performances by Skrillex, DeadMau5 and other dubstep artists by the thousands.

While other mainstream brands may have safely snuck elements of dubstep into their ad soundtracks, Kmart gets the prize for going all-in with a back-to-school ad featuring the song “Phunkshock” by Motroda.

The Kmart spot is a great example of using dubstep in a national branding campaign. When you’re ready to use this emerging sub-genre of electronica in your own media productions, check out this royalty-free dubstep track from MusicRevolution.com.

If there’s any silver lining to the collapse of record sales, it’s that TV jingles got way better. National brands with advertising dollars are the new best option for a great song that must be heard by the world. And the creative team at BBDO New York recently hit a musical home-run by building an entire campaign around this market reality for their client, Lowes home improvement stores.

Check out the amazing songs below around which executive creative director Wil Boudreau and his Lowes team built visuals. The core human value expressed by all the spots, and the official title of the campaign, is “Never Stop Improving.”

“Naked Eye” performed by Oxford

“The ‘Never Stop Improving’ campaign was always conceived as a music-driven campaign.” explained Boudreau. “The idea was to differentiate the brand with breakthrough, category-busting creative and surprising music that you’d seek out and download. The music helps us position Lowes as an innovator and trend setter. Our initial presentations literally had our clients dancing in the aisles.”

“I Make My Own Sunshine” performed by Alyssa Bonagura

“None of the songs were commissioned. They were are all existing songs discovered by BBDO’s in-house music department who reached out to various contacts they have in the music publishing world.”
“Typically, we searched for two things: 1. A relevant lyric that supported our commercial (ie “Don’t Stop” or “Tear It Down Then Make It Beautiful”) and 2. A tone and tempo that matched the mood of the creative.”

“Make it Beautiful” performed by The Phantoms

Just as recording artists historically have had to balance the perceived needs the record-buying public against their own vision, so will artists of the future contend with they’re being told is “what’s hot in the licensing world right now.” I’ve funtioned as the middle-man in these transactions and would offer this nugget of wisdom to the musician seeking a major advertising sync: Make sure your music smiles. If you’ve got something dark to say, save it for the bonus tracks. What major corporate brands, and arguably the whole world, needs right now is some positivity……that’s all you, man.

A big thanks to Wil and his creative team for making TV commercials as cool as the TV shows.

This spot, released on Red Bull’s YouTube channel on July 2012, has the clear sensory advantage over other TV spots unlucky enough to be sharing air time with it. Why? First, the sheer culture shock of hearing a stuffy old British guy rhyming over a hip-hop track is enough to at least get your attention. Then come the arresting animations that are reportedly done by some mysterious ad agency creative in Hungary (Red Bull’s official international ad agency is Kastner & Partners). Then my favorite part, which is the dead-simple synth outro you hear after the logo comes up. It’s as if some goofy School House Rock party will surely continue raging on after you’ve been excused from the room. Brilliant.

“Circles” by Darko Saric

Perfect for:

The exact moment our main character (let’s say he’s British just for fun) learns that the college disciplinary committee was so moved by his speech they’re going to overlook the Jeffrey Dahmer theme party, cow-tipping Olympics, and the triste with chancellor’s niece. The full band coming in at :15 synchronizes beautifully with the follow-up moment when our man steps out on the courtyard steps to a cheering throng of students.

Seriously, “Circles” is one of MusicRevolution.com’s all-time best sellers and we’d highly recommend this royalty free triumphant music to any media producer needing to kick off a video with a modern shot of feel-good.

Musicians’s Comments:

“The idea behind Circles was to try to mix two of my favorites bands: U2 and Coldplay. To achieve this sound, I began working on the rhythm/riff with the electric guitar. As soon as I came up with the main riff that has that characteristic U2 energy, I decided to work on the drums and bass and I wanted to get away from a straight rock style and go for a more unusual pattern using some syncopation with the snare and driving the music with the toms.

The icing on the cake is the lead guitar that has the sensitivity of Coldplay, specifically the piano and trying to express the same emotion with the guitar.

Then, to enhance the contrast I added a duplicate guitars which are recorded with different combinations of pickups. As well as piano and slide guitar, helped me make the track wider and spatial.”

A big thanks to Darko Saric for letting us carry this incredible track!

Electronica is a broad term that encompasses a huge number of music styles, all of which clearly and audibly were created by or with computers and electronics. Not just the blips, beeps and sweeps of the original Micro Moog, but even acoustic music that’s been wonderfully mangled by the hands of a skilled digital audio whiz. Our stock music library contains progressive trance, drum and bass, hardcore, house, ambient, down tempo, dub, garage, two-step, jungle, chill out and more. Tracks We Like:

“Honor You Ft. Tan Girls”

“Beat Up Tha Streetz”

The Interview:
High profile projects or clients you have worked for?
I had 1 song on the radio in Syracuse, NY entitled “Have Another Drink,” which was for the college crowd. I made the beat for the song.

Primary instrument?
Guitar

Favorite music-making piece of gear or software you currently use?
Reason 3.0

Piece of gear or software you wish you owned?
I wish I had all different kinds of instruments to experiment with + an analog recording studio. Instruments just kind of make sound and it would be nice to get a lot of different textures recorded. And, analog recordings sound much more genuine than digital, for example Beatles (ANALOG) vs. Justin Bieber (DIGITAL).

Film score or song you admire? Why?
“Love Me Do” by The Beatles- It’s pretty difficult to replicate that harmony. As basic at is, I’ve never heard a single band, artist or Beatles impersonator do anything like it, not even a little bit. Was it recorded by aliens?

Music education background?
I have a Minor in Music Industry from Syracuse University.

Memorable “Aha!” moment during your musical education?
When 1 day in class they told us the music industry was unexpectedly shrinking and soon even major artists would go bankrupt. Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston would be penniless if they didn’t revive their careers, release albums, and begin tirelessly touring year-round in major global tours.

Most embarrassing music-related moment?
When I was 12 I was kicked out of a band I initially founded because they decided the bassist was a better singer/songwriter. I learned my lesson and now I only employ machines if I can help it.

If you had a time machine and could record or perform once with any artist, who would it be?
Bob Marley and the Wailers

Moment you first knew you would be a musician?
My Dad had an old guitar sitting around and refused to teach me (and I wasn’t allowed to listen to music at night either). But out of anger from my constant prodding, he showed me an E chord and I started writing songs by moving the E chord up and down the frets. I was only 9 years old at the time so everyone was impressed.

Advice you would give to a younger family member interested in a music career?
The best strategy for a successful career is, if you yourself like your music, then other people will like it just as much. If you don’t enjoy it, nobody else will like it either. The best songs are by songwriters who really did need to express themselves, so that song was like a life-saver to them. Artists tend to have a lot of silly songs nobody cares about and 1 or 2 really personal songs that literally became hit singles… Eric Clapton “Cocaine” (about Clapton’s Cocaine addiction), The Eagles “Hotel California” (about disparity of class/wealth), Beatles “Twist and Shout” (performed by 4 megastars who weren’t really getting laid yet), Notorious B.I.G. “Ready to Die” (he expects to be assassinated any day now), Rolling Stones “Satisfaction” (about the illusion of the American Dream)… etc. The recipe for a superstar is your average hopeful, naive ambitious children who accidentally soothe their own hurt feelings with the therapy of music, and now have the capacity to do the same thing for others.

Five songs or albums you’d take with you to a desert island?
Chronic –2001

Beatles – Red Album

Pearl Jam – Ten

GZA – Liquid Swords

If you could master another instrument, what would it be?
Piano

Favorite time of day to work in your studio?
After midnight

Any studio collaboration you experienced that stands out in your mind? Why?
Working with girl group “TAN GIRLS.” They were classically trained vocalists and improvised their own harmonies.

Big thanks to Domitian for taking the time to do this interview and make his music available for licensing on MusicRevolution.com. We think these tracks are ideal to License RnB royalty free for video.
