The usage of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s song “10,000 Miles” in the film Fly Away Home was cited on a forum I found as one the best “uses of a single song to accompany a film scene”. I’d have to agree .

At almost six minutes in length, the music sequence at the end of the movie stands on its own as a full length music video, but it’s important to appreciate the context in which director Caroll Ballard placed this song in the storyline. A 14-year-old girl (played by Anna Paquin) has just a few minutes left to land her aircraft in a specific patch of North Carolina wetlands before they become the official property of a land developer diametrically opposed to the flock of geese following her there (*CLAIMED UNDER FAIR USE):

At the end of the movie, the girl’s father and co-pilot (played by Jeff Daniels) has sustained an injury and can’t help his daughter navigate. Also, her week-long journey has captured  the media spotlight and become a hot button issue for the environmentalists. With all that story tension, a lesser director may have deployed some intense music and a 30 second montage of shots that culminate in the aircraft safely landing.

Instead, Ballard slows the film’s pulse WAY down and takes her time with this beautiful song and a series of breathtaking aerial shots that run for a full three minutes. By Hollywood standards that’s too much time and it detracts from the story tension…..but somehow it really works. In a good way.

Of course, Paquin’s character safely lands and everyone cheers. But that occurrence almost seems overshadowed by the profundity of the final music sequence.

Great stuff. Watch this film with your kids.

“Temptations” by Acoustic Music Productions

Perfect for:

Company videos that begin by presenting a real head scratcher of a problem to the audience and use graphs and charts to explain it. All with a youthful enthusiasm of a 21-year-old Stanford grad student. This track is ideal for companies needing a compelling bed of hi tech music royalty free.

Musician’s Comments:

One of the type of tracks that sells more in other libraries from my catalogue are the short solo piano tracks like “Old and New”. And also my Cinematic piano series like “Cinematic piano 1”. But my best Seller is definitely “Temptations”.

One of the biggest contributing factors to the success of comedian Jerry Seinfeld was the fact that his content was profanity-free. The list of comedians who can make us laugh is pretty long, but just try to name comedians who make us laugh and not feel uncomfortable when grandma is nearby and you can’t get too far past Bill Cosby and Jerry Seinfeld.

As a parent of two boys, ages 10 and 14, this concept has really come home. My 14 old wants to turn me on to great artists like Logic and Macklemore while the 10 year old is riding with us in the car. Any musical brilliance I hear (there’s more than you might think) is instantly forgotten upon the first F-bomb when I have to say “Next!”.

“Can’t they get the same point across without cussing?” I ask?  This is great music, but I do not live in a world were dropping F-bombs all over the place is cool. I have young kids, bosses, neighbors and customers.

So it is with great pride that I feature a new MusicRevolution.com musician who creates profanity-free rap music. Check out MacDividinz:

New Age music is music of a range of styles intended to convey feelings of relaxation, inspiration and optimism. I’m currently doing some work for a small company out of Indiana who created a wicked cool marketing tool. This needs to be checked out by any business that uses or creates video.

Most companies understand the concept of uploading the annual company video to a YouTube account.  And anyone who watches TV commercials understands the value of a message that is well-communicated with video.

But since 2005, a small team of computer science grads from Purdue have been helping tech-savvy companies use web video as a communications tool, but only for private correspondence between groups or individuals. The company is Covideo and the service they provide is video email.

Covideo’s customers primarily use video email for four things:
1) Help teams solve complex problems when they’re working apart from each other (i.e. interior designer emails a painting issue to the carpenter).

2) Help executives humanize their messages to employees (CEO sets the record straight on a controversial issue).

3) Help business development people make their pitches more personal (An utility company shows a prospective partner their new facility).

4) Show customers that everything’s going ok (a dog kennel shows a family their pet is doing fine while they’re away).

Most video people think of movies and TV commercials as the ultimate application of video. But with production costs becoming more affordable than ever (tracks in our production music library start at $9.99), why not consider on making good videos designed to be used only within a “closed funnel of communication”? Most of us have received more than a hundred emails just today. But I’ll bet none of those emails has a thumbnail image inside that points to a personalized video saying, “Hey, Mike. Just wanted to show you what we’re up to today at XYZ firm (cue awesome production music track).”

That’s pretty cutting edge.

The next time your video client asks you about ways to market your video. Definitely consider mentioning video mail to them.

“Lets Get It Done (No Vocals)” by Ethereal Motion

Perfect for:

Broadcast spot where a young metropolitan couple on a stroll are suddenly swept away on some energy beam that conveys global connectivity. Personally, that experience would make me scream like a little girl, but our TV couple never breaks a smile. This royalty free retro background music track offsets the big budget visual effects and gives the spot a down-to-earth vibe.

Ethereal Motion’s Comments:

“Very 60’s oriented song similar to Janis Joplin.  Rowdy and groovy.  Captures the 60’s vibe perfectly.”

Big thanks to Ethereal Motion for letting us carry this great production music track.

There have been cases of wedding photographers getting sued for using music online and in their wedding videos that are produced for commercial gain, including the Tony Romo wedding video that was published on YouTube last year using Coldplay’s “Fix You”. Apparently, the wedding photographer didn’t have permission to use Coldplay’s copyrighted track and it cost him a settlement. While Coldplay’s “Fix It” might only cost $0.99 on iTunes, this is for personal use only, and not for commercial use. A wedding photographer/videographer might have to pay a significant fee (in the thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars) to use a popular music song in a wedding video or slideshow. A high-quality, royalty-free production music track can keep you and your company legal and it can help you complete your wedding video or slideshow without breaking your budget.

With over 17,000 tracks of royalty-free production music online, there are many stock music choices for your wedding video or slideshow, or any other project on MusicRevolution.com. We have the royalty-free production music that you need.
