The house groove in this spot for Norwegian Cruise Lines is so slammin’ we tracked down David Muhlenfield, the producer behind this great song for an interview. Muhlenfield is actually on staff at The Martin Agency, the advertising company who handled the entire campaign. Dave was kind enough to elaborate about his career, other projects he’s done and the particulars of how this soundtrack was created:

“The track was originally written for a brand video we were during the pitch for the Norwegian account. It was recorded in my home studio (which runs Apple Logic and uses KRK monitors), under the auspices of English Major LLC, a music company I set up with the blessings of The Martin Agency so I could pursue songwriting and ad-music production independently of my agency work. (Incidentally I have done a lot of music-driven ads, including all of the FreeCreditReport.com & FreeCreditScore.com band songs, plus Comcast’s XFINITY campaign and some Wal-Mart spots).

By the time we finally won the pitch, everyone at Norwegian was loving the track so they wanted it in the TV campaign. I was going to be producing the TV spot with my partner Will Esparza (total genius by the way), so to maintain focus on that, we hired the Lodge, a music house with NYC and LA offices, to take the original track and push it in as many different directions as possible, just to see where it could go.

The version in the spot is actually pretty close to the original, but has less raw “club” drums and brings in a really smooth vocal and beautiful live guitar that worked well with the footage we brought back from Mallorca.

Some other versions the Lodge produced are on Norwegian’s Facebook page in an app called “Mix it Up.” There’s a pounding underground club version plus a sexy lounge mix and a reggae-esque version that makes you want to drink immediately.

Will and I had the idea of using dance music from the very beginning. Good dance music can either energize you or chill you out, depending on your mood; and that synced up nicely with what we were trying to say about Norwegian—i.e., get on the ship and you can have pretty much whatever experience you’re looking for.

It’s been nice to see so many YouTube comments asking who wrote the track, and saying how it should be a real song etc. But the best props we’ve gotten have come from the DJs on the ships, who like the track so much they’re integrating it into their live sets, so it really is getting played alongside Kaskade and Swedish House Mafia and whatever else they’re dancing to in Mallorca.

People gettin’ sweaty to your song on the dance floor…dream come true my friend.”

Producers looking to license house beats for video can find great tracks like this with the search tool on www.musicrevolution.com.

“Last year we launched our Free Royalty-Free Music collection to celebrate the anniversary of our 2010 launch. Our Free Royalty-Free Music program was received with such enthusiasm that we have decided to expand the collection with additional royalty-free music tracks,” stated Chris Cardell, Co-Founder of MusicRevolution LLC. “In addition to our Free Royalty-Free Music collection, our community of extraordinary musicians has contributed over 16,000 (and growing) high-quality tracks which start at just $9.99 per single track,” added Cardell.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of Raymond Hemms to MusicRevolution.com and to our Free Royalty-Free Music program. As part of his launch on MusicRevolution.com, Hemms has agreed to make a select collection of his tracks available for a limited time (through March 22, 2012) on our Free Royalty-Free Music page,” stated Mike Bielenberg, Co-Founder of MusicRevolution LLC. “Hemms is an Atlanta-based musician specializing in acoustic instrumental music. Earlier in his career, Hemms played for a funk/rock band that opened for famous acts such as Little Feat and Hootie and the Blowfish. Later, Hemms became the lead guitarist for Christian hard rock band Hope’s Anchor, and then went solo in early 2011,” added Bielenberg.

“Most of the tracks in this collection are the result of a deep desire to connect,” said Raymond Hemms. “I felt really compelled to produce music that made connections with people– like sitting around in coffee shops and being with friends. You know…making memories. I’m really proud of how these tracks turned out and I am pleased to offer them on MusicRevolution.com,” added Hemms.
MusicRevolution.com has created this page of royalty-free music tracks that are absolutely free to use: http://www.musicrevolution.com/free_production_music/.

I once read a quote from a up-and-coming movie starlet about being on the David Letterman Show for the first time. “You’re sitting there talking to Dave, but your mind says, ‘That can’t be Dave Letterman, because Dave Letterman lives inside my TV.”

A movie star’s cognitive functions may not be the best point of reference for something like this, but we can all certainly identify with our minds having to work overtime when first seeing something/someone in person that we’ve previously only seen on TV. It’s a pretty heady experience.

Imagine then how Connecticut-based music co-op Northern League must have felt when they looked online and heard their track being used for this movie trailer promoting Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family:

It actually wasn’t a complete shock. Weeks earlier the group (consisting of rapper “AB”, a producer/tech whiz named “FS” and two vocalists) had submitted a track to the movie studio at the request of Tyler Perry’s camp.

“They knew our track record was excellent as far as turnaround time goes”, explained AB. “So they asked us to submit a song for the trailer. We didn’t hear anything for 2 to 3 weeks and just started working on different projects.”

“Then one day FS reminded me to look for any new reviews of our music on iTunes. And there we were being advertised with the movie! Tyler’s people got so busy they just used our track and decided to let us know after the fact which was totally cool with us. They loved the track.”

When asked about the creative process behind conjuring up such a great hook, AB laughed and said, “We were actually in the process of moving our studio from New Haven to Brooklyn so our gear was scattered all over. FS had to email me the basic music track so I could set up a small recording rig at my mom’s house and track vocals.”

“It gets worse. Perry’s people came back to us with changes to make in the lyrics. On the night we were recording the changes there was a huge snow storm and the power went out. We had to move everything super-fast from my laptop to a flash drive, get into the car and drive to the nearest place we could use email and send off the track.”

Taking obstacles in stride like that has served Northern League well.

“We’ve been pushing at this for a couple years now. We’ve all known each other since we were kids and now we’re seeing our music getting used on CSI, Entourage and movie trailers like this. It’s been awesome.”

We’ve asked the guys at Northern League to upload some of the catalog to MusicRevolution.com so that other video producers looking to license hip hop beats for video can have access to this incredibly talented group. Fingers crossed on that.

In my original blog (Part I) about this trailer I basically said, “Would someone at Northean League please contact me for an interview? This track is amazing.” Special thanks to AB for responding and of course, huge props to Northern League for such a great song placement. Well done.

Many of our readers and customers on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) are video producers. This isn’t surprising since video is naked without sound or music. Video producers usually need music to complete their video or multimedia productions.

I recently came across Best Vendor (www.bestvendor.com ). Best Vendor is a resource for finding the best work apps based on the experience of others. Best Vendor recently published an interesting infographic showing the results of a survey of “The Most Popular Design Tools”. We thought the results for the “Video Editing” category would be of particular interest for our readers and customers on MusicRevolution.com. So what tools do video producers use for video editing? According to Best Vendor’s Survey, respondents said —

–50% use Apple’s Final Cut Pro

–21% use Adobe Premiere Pro

–14% use Adobe After Effects

–7% use Camtasia

This isn’t exactly shocking to see Apple and Adobe at the top of the list, however, we still thought that this survey about video editing tools would be useful for and of interest to many of our readers.

With over 16,000 tracks of royalty-free production music online, MusicRevolution.com has the production music that video producers need to affordably complete their projects.

Francois Girad, director of The Red Violin (1998) starring Samuel L Jackson, originally wanted to use period music from each of the five historical periods through which the story subject travels. Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Corigliano disagreed and instead pushed for this single, compelling theme to follow the instrument through the story:

I once watched Corigliano confess to a group of college students that he was deathly afraid of actually performing music, especially after growing up backstage with his father, a concertmaster for the New York Philharmonic who regularly performed major works written for the violin.

How satisfying it must have been then for Corigliano to receive an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the soundtrack and later receive commissions to flesh out the main theme into a full length violin concerto performed by the likes of Philharmonia Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Media producers seeking to pull heartstrings with royalty free violin music are in luck since classical music by Mozart and Brahms are public domain and now available at MusicRevolution.com.

When the 2000 film 13 Days was in development there were assumptions at the movie studio that Kevin Costner would play the part of president John F Kennedy. However Costner felt he could give the audience a grittier perspective by playing the part of Special Assistant to the President Kenneth O’Donnell,  a trusted aid to the Kennedys who, according to a television interview with Defense Secretary Robert MacNamara, actually played no advisory role in the crisis whatsoever.

In an earlier blog I featured a film-making technique wherein dialog is intentionally drowned out by the music score because the emotional tone of the scene is more important than the actual words being spoken.

Rent this movie, and watch the final scene where Kevin Costner’s character takes a moment to reflect on what was saved (*claimed under Fair Use):

Composer Trevor Jones’s brilliant orchestral score gets  much louder than what Jack & Bobby Kennedy are discussing on the Oval Office patio. Great stuff.

Historian Ernest R. May has called the Cuban Missile Crisis ” probably the greatest international crisis in all of human experience.” Royalty free patriotic music like Jones’s score can be found at MusicRevolution.com.

There have been cases of wedding photographers getting sued for using music online and in their wedding videos that are produced for commercial gain, including the Tony Romo wedding video that was published on YouTube this year using Coldplay’s “Fix You”. Apparently, the wedding photographer didn’t have permission to use Coldplay’s copyrighted track and it cost him a settlement. While Coldplay’s “Fix It” might only cost $0.99 on iTunes, this is for personal use only, and not for commercial use. A wedding photographer/videographer might have to pay a significant fee (in the thousands or even tens of thousands of $) to use a popular music song in a wedding video or slideshow.

We thought that we would highlight some of the affordable royalty-free production music on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) that would be suitable for wedding videos and slideshows.
