Featured Production Music Track:

Land and Water by Chill Purpose

Music that deftly helps the ADD mind stay in that sweet spot where many screens are open, much data is flowing, blood pressure is low and the FBI still hasn’t caught on yet.

Last week we had a great response to our Customer Track Request for eulogy video music.

We also got useful feedback from the community regarding some bugs in our forums and I wanted to let everyone know of two fixes we made to our forums this week:

1)      Forum posts are now chronologically ordered from newest to oldest so you don’t have to scroll through several pages to find the latest posts.

2)       Some of you came to a blank white screen after creating your post. That has been fixed.

Also, we have created a spec for a more-user friendly forum layout and are discussing this with our dev team as well.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and are thrilled to be connecting talented musicians with busy media producers.

Thanks for letting us sell your music!

An audio post house based in the US is looking for slow, cinematic orchestral music for videos that would commemorate soldiers, police officers and other public servants killed in the line of duty. Each video will be around 4 minutes long, but it’s ok if the track you are submitting is less than 4 minutes because they’re fine with repeating sections or looping the track if necessary. More importantly, the instruments must be realistic, well-mixed and convey a reverent, solemn kind of mood.

If you have a track on MusicRevolution that fits this description, please click on the link below to the forum thread and post a reply with a link to your track (see instructions below for creating a track link). We have asked this requester to check this thread frequently:

Recently, we have had a number of requests to provide suggestions for royalty-free production music that would be appropriate for “sizzle reels”. Sizzle reels, or demo reels, are a great way for organizations to provide a dynamic, multimedia overview of what they are all about. In addition to helping convey a corporate message and branding, sizzle reels can be very effective for keeping people engaged while they are waiting to hear a speaker at a corporate meeting, conference or tradeshow.

Of course, music to be used for a corporate sizzle reel needs to be cleared for commercial use, otherwise the organization risks copyright infringement and the incurrence of potentially significant expenses. A popular song on iTunes for $0.99 is great for personal use, but it is not cleared for commercial use. An organization could pay significant fee (in the thousands or even tens of thousands of $) to use a recognizable track of popular music in their sizzle reel. In addition to the prohibitive cost, a recognizable track of popular music could potentially be a distraction in delivering your corporate message or overview, since popular music like a song by Lady Gaga could be more memorable to your audience than your corporate message.

When we think about sizzle reels, descriptive terms like “energy” and “upbeat” come to mind when selecting the right production music. After some of these recent requests, we specifically tagged a select group of tracks that we think will work well for many sizzle reels. A search on MusicRevolution.com (www.musicrevolution.com) for “sizzle reel” yields the following 10 tracks—

http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?keyword=sizzle+reel&application=0&mood=0&genre=0&instrument=0&influence=&vocals=1&results=20&x=34&y=3

A few of my favorite production music tracks for sizzle reels are—

Live Wire (#00001222) by Shockwave-Sound

http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=1195

Be The Best (#00076784) by soundroad

http://www.musicrevolution.com/search/?trackid=20063

With nearly 15,000 tracks of royalty-free production music online, there are many other possible music choices for sizzle reels on MusicRevolution.com.

A high-quality, royalty-free production music track can keep your company legal and can help to complete your sizzle reel without breaking your budget.

From an audio post house based in the US: “I’ve been searching on the Music Revolution site, but have had very little luck trying to find a certain sound alike song.  I need it to have the same vibe as the song in the link below [slow tempo, Janis Joplin type lead guitar]. Sort of a 60’s throwback lazy guitar vibe feel.  Can you recommend any tracks or point me in the right direction?  Thank you!”

There is an art to speaking to the boss. I once watched the owner of a multi-million dollar company go into sensory shutdown as one of his employees provided too much detail to a simple question.

I’ve found that the key is to put the data into a few easy-to-label buckets, paint a picture of how those buckets interact, then try to speak in absolutes. For example, “The products team is overloaded. They’re too busy to answer all these questions from accounting. We need to carve out a day next week for that to happen.”

To a busy boss with just sixty seconds of time to focus on your needs, that’s all they need to know. Simple right? Yet it remains hard for many employees to speak in broad strokes like that.

I think this same concept is what distinguishes a track in our production music library that sells from a track that doesn’t sell. We’ve noticed that when the emotional intent behind a track is focused, easy-to-understand and articulated well, the track does well in our catalog.

Check out these recent hot sellers:

(*To hear this Music Bin,  click on this link, scroll down and look for the list of tracks in the left hand column)

http://www.musicrevolution.com/?binid=104

When I hear these tracks, the first thing I notice is how wonderfully 1-dimensional they are.

In the production music world, 1-dimensional is a high compliment. A musician who can tightly zero in on one emotion, one genre, and one melodic motif is a musician enlightened enough to know his/her place in the larger puzzle. Here are some specific examples from that Music Bin:

“Sexpensive” by Kora3000 is pure adrenaline. The musical elements are straight from Depeche Mode. Kora3000 wasn’t trying to touch anyone’s heart with this track, just increase their heart rate a bit and make sure they remember what century they’re in. Simple.

“Rock Pop Run Away” by Sergei Stern is also energetic. And it’s serious too. No horseplay allowed whilst this music is playing. But what makes the writing so genius is all the space he leaves to be filled by a VO and/or visuals.

Stern understands he is a supporting actor, not the star. Actor Michael Caine seemed perfectly happy getting an Oscar for doing that exact thing.

Big thanks to these terrific musicians who’s talent and creativity help make MusicRevolution the production music marketplace.

We recently made some improvements to our production music subscription offerings (http://www.musicrevolution.com/subs_options ).While some of the changes are subtle, they matter from a user’s perspective and they make the site and the subscriptions easier to use. Some of the more notable improvements include—

1) Subscribers now have the ability to directly download tracks from any of their saved music bins in “My Music Bin” on MusicRevolution.com. “My Music Bin” is a great feature for buyers to save music for different projects.

2) Subscribers now have the ability to see their full history of subscription downloads, including all track details and format, MP3 or WAV, and how many available downloads remain in their subscription.

And, of course, we are adding new music to all of our subscription offerings all the time and all of our tracks are available in both MP3 and WAV formats. The MusicRevolution.com “Value Subscription”, which starts at $149.99 for a 1-month subscription (allows for up to 10 downloads) and $399.99 for a 1-year subscription (allows for up to 50 downloads), provides affordable access to over 5,000 tracks of high-quality, royalty-free music suitable for a range of multi-media projects.

For production music buyers that need a broader selection of music, the MusicRevolution.com “Complete Subscription” provides access to our entire production music library of over 14,000 tracks and is also a tremendous value. Together, these are two of the best royalty-free production music subscription offerings available.

One the great things about the Internet is feedback—almost instantaneous feedback. While we prefer the good feedback, we also like the bad feedback. We put a tremendous amount of experience and planning into the launch of MusicRevolution.com in April 2010, but we continue to tweak and improve the site based on our own observations and the input of our users to provide great music, great value and an easy to use site and product offerings. We have a great community of musicians and music buyers on MusicRevolution.com. Keep the feedback coming!

There has been a tremendous amount of press recently surrounding Spotify’s much anticipated launch in the United States. Of course, Spotify’s U.S. launch has been a long time in the making. While Spotify was founded in 2008, until recently it services were only available in Europe.

I first learned of Spotify (www.spotify.com) just about two years ago when I read a July 25, 2009 article in The New York Times by Brad Stone entitled “The Music Streams That Soothe an Industry.” At the time, my co-founder Mike Bielenberg and I were deep into the planning phase about the business model for this site, MusicRevolution.com, an online marketplace for royalty-free production music. At that point, the production music business had largely been conducted offline. But we had strong beliefs that the production music business, which has lagged behind consumer music and other types of content, would continue to migrate to the Internet. Our original plan was focused on taking the same types of production music products that were traditionally sold offline, and selling them online instead. Our plan was create an innovative online platform to enable music buyers to find and license the best stock music using easy and affordable royalty-free license terms. And our plan as a production music marketplace was based on creating an online platform and community to provide professional and aspiring musicians the opportunity to license their music and collaborate with each other. Following the trends that were occurring with consumer, or popular, music, it was clear to us that production music would make the same move to the web.

After I read the article mentioned above, a light bulb went off that there was yet another opportunity to monetize production music online. I read that Spotify’s model was based on consumers streaming music rather than downloading individual tracks like on Apple’s iTunes. When I read this about Spotify I thought why couldn’t we do the same thing with production music. So in addition to enabling buyers to download production music tracks for commercial use, we conceived the MusicRevolution Internet Music Stream http://www.musicrevolution.com/music_streams for background music while Spotify streams music to consumers for individual listening, MusicRevolution.com’s Internet Music Stream provides an affordable, royalty-free alternative for background music for a range of commercial applications, including retail, restaurant, fitness club, business and website background music. With our launch in April 2010, we believe that MusicRevolution.com was the first to stream production music using the Internet for commercial use as background music. For now, we believe that the future for commercial background music is streaming over the Internet, rather than delivery by satellite and other proprietary systems. Who knows what the next evolution will be?

With all the press about Spotify’s U.S. launch, it’s ironic that there was an article on July 15, 2011 in Silicon Republic entitled “Music Revolution for America – Spotify to go live in US today”. We agree that a revolution is occurring and will continue to occur with all digital content, including consumer and commercial music. That’s why we acquired the domain name www.musicrevolution.com back in June 2009. We thought the name pretty much summed what had started and will continue to happen with music.

I want to say thanks to Spotify for giving us the idea for MusicRevolution.com’s Internet Music Stream for background music. We wish Spotify good luck with its U.S. launch.
