When Spotify started out, it took $1 billion in seed capital from Wall Street. As most of those arrangements go, 11 years later,  Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is racing to a place where he can rely less on those investors……and instead rely more on you and me.

Companies go public for one reason; to raise money. By giving Joe Public a chance to pull a twenty dollar bill out of his pocket and proudly become part owner, a well-orchestrated public offering normally creates billions of new, long-awaited dollars for the company’s leader to take the company to the next level (more R&D, more advertising, etc).

99% of the time, public offerings are underwritten by a major investment bank such as Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley. The banks handle the paperwork, generate PR and liaison with the Securities & Exchange Commission. In exchange for all this, they get 7% of the action.

But after years of being held hostage by the major record labels (which is actually good for artists), Ek is clearly not in the mood to be held hostage by Wall Street. He’s also not in the mood to see his initial investors get a bigger cut, which they will if Spotify’s IPO (Initial Public Offering) occurs after 2017.

In a ground-breaking move, Ek is tentatively planning to NOT use an investment bank to underwrite the IPO. Instead he’s going to do a “direct listing” and let the market do whatever it wants to do. No interference from big banks. That’s like Willie Nelson working directly with the IRS without getting help from accountants.

Why does Ek think he can get away with this? For the same reason Donald Trump knew he could win the Republican nomination without spending a penny on advertising……he’s already famous. It’s funny to imagine Goldman Sach’s PR team trying to advise Spotify on how to become more well-known (“Have you considered a darker shade of green in the logo, Mr. Ek?”).

I recently hosted a podcast for Atlanta-based technology company Shofur and explained that if you’re a person who feels compelled to dedicate part of your personal investment portfolio to music, Spotify will be one of your best bets. There aren’t many “pure plays” on the NYSE where your dollars will go more directly to artists. I can say that with a clear conscience because artists have already ensured they will always get their fair share from Spotify streams. Ek was brilliantly outmaneuvered by SoundExchange (more on that here) years ago. That battle has been won.

So with that behind us, let’s all feel proud of Spotify for sticking it to Wall Street. It’s so rock ‘n roll.

It’s understandable why classic songs are classic songs; even when they’re cheesy. Baby-boomers made out for the first time to Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. My first beer buzz was underscored by The Simple Mind’s “Don’t You Forget About Me”.

Experts call that associative listening. What we were doing when we first heard the song made the song great in our minds. That’s why reminiscing about the music of Iron Maiden is fun for me…until I actually go listen to the band. Then I feel embarrassed. As generations fade away, a large body of our music goes with us.

So what is it about classical music that transcends that generational attrition? Why in the year 2017 – when music has never been better (I really mean that) is there still no better way to convey timelessness than the music of J.S. Bach, Amadeus Mozart and Frederic Chopin?

I think it’s because those guys didn’t have laptops. The rules they broke didn’t involve electricity, viral videos or choreographed drones..just melodies and chords. Say it with me: melodies and chords.

250 years later, because of the sheer nutritional value of their music, there is still no better way to make people stand up at a wedding ceremony or respect an established institution than to spin a track by one of those masters.

So with that, please enjoy this lovingly cultivated collection of Classical Music. These tracks are public domain and available for your use in videos, commercials and TV shows. Enjoy.

This weekend I’ll be spreading my best friend’s ashes on a mountain top in North Carolina. Keith Gedamke was an avid outdoorsman and – before he died of cancer in January – requested this specific spot, which is a two-hour hike from the base of Mt. Pisgah National Forest. Dominique (my fiancé) will record video that we’ll edit and post on YouTube.

The song I’ve picked out for the video will be perfect; not because Keith loved the song (he’s never heard it), but because it’s going to flow beautifully with slow motion footage of the mountain skyline; because it’s sparse enough for Dominique to record some nice vocal “oohs” and “aahs” on top of it; and most importantly because YouTube won’t flag it for copyright violation. I don’t need that headache when sharing this with Keith’s family.

Here’s the song:

Blue Skies And A Happy Heart | (#00536034) by Davis Harwell Music

My best friend was a photo journalist. For more than two decades, he worked on staff at a newspaper in Sumter, SC. We first met in elementary school so – honestly – he could’ve chosen a career in waste management and we still would have been buddies. In conversation, how we each chose to pay our bills was just “grown-up stuff”. There were always more pressing matters to discuss like relationships, sports, politics, partying, camping, etc.

I would imagine that most close relationships with artists are like that; you talk about everything but the art. To be completely honest, I’d only half-listen when Keith would occasionally mention an accolade he’d won or a football shot that turned out better than expected. When the hell was he going to settle down and have kids?

Photographer: Keith Gedamke – 1st Place Winner – South Carolina Press Assocation 2016 News Awards © 2016 The Sumter Item

It’s not that I didn’t recognize his skill, or respect that he took pictures for a living. It’s just that I assumed there would be many, many more pictures to come. And I took it for granted. Now I find myself hoarding every one I can find.

Two weeks ago the South Carolina Press Association commemorated Keith posthumously; not in a “you did something important decades ago; hope you’re enjoying retirement” kind of way. More like a “you took pictures six months ago while battling cancer that are of such quality that contemporaries half your age are deeply humbled; how could you even pull that off in your condition?” kind of way. Keith took 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in the Pictorial category as well as 1st & 2nd place in the Daily Feature category.

While these were taken, I remember Keith complaining about his hands shaking, making it difficult to shoot. I remember him complaining about equipment malfunctions. I remember him complaining about stomach pain. I thought, dude, go home and take a nap.

Now I realize…..he knew these pictures were the children that would survive him.

For over 20 years his beloved town saw themselves through his pictures. And in the same way a dying parent needs closure with all their children before they can let go, Keith had more things he needed to say – through the images he captured – before he could let go.

In my next installment of this blog, I’ll share the actual video and talk about the editing/publishing process. Stay tuned….and hug the ones you love.

Hearing Coltrane, Dizzy and Miles blow a solo in 1954 probably felt – at least to a layman – much like venturing out into metropolis currently feels to me. A brute force; all of it demanding my full attention and respect.

Which explains why music lovers so hungrily consumed the relaxed, unhurried piano playing of Ahmad Jamal in 1958; and why this TV spot so easily helps you catch your breath:

Every shot was created on the new iPhone 7.

Jamal’s 1958 release At the Pershing coined the term “cool jazz” because it exploited an element of jazz that the prior legends wouldn’t……space. Jamal let the upright bass and ride cymbals go for measures at a time. He didn’t fill every chorus with exhausting virtuosity. He let the sustain of his piano and the structure of the song do the work. Audiences finally had jazz they could make love to; jazz they could have conversations over (I have mixed feelings about that one) and jazz that more easily fit into their lives.

Jamal earned enough income with At the Pershing to take a three year hiatus and buy a restaurant. It was at this restaurant the Alhambra in downtown Chicago, that he recorded “Snowfall”, used in the Apple spot. Apple is projected to earn enough income with the iPhone 7 to purchase the most expense entree on Alhambra Palace’s menu (filet mignon) one-and-a-half billion times*.

Here are fantastically chill jazz piano ballads available for licensing on MusicRevolution.com

*Jamal’s restaurant actually closed in 1961, but the Alhambra Palace in downtown Chicago looks great and I needed a fun punchline.
